Hi Pamela,

Are you sure we have a connection with Robert Roberts? I hope so.
Which one of his children do you come from? Where do you live State/country? I'm in NSW Australia.
I look forward to hearing from you again soon.

Anita

Hi,

Yes, Robert is turning out to be a man of mystery indeed.

1. Ok, we know he died here in Newcastle NSW Australia in 1888 = AGED 78 (Year of birth 1809)

2. He married in Aberdare, Glamorgan Wales in 1851  = AGED 38 (Year of birth 1813)

3. I can not find when he arrived in Australia somewhere between 1859 & 1863.

4. 1 of his sons was born in 1859 in Wales and died at sea in 1862 when his wife Rachel and two sons came out to Australia.

4. Do know on the wedding Cert, he was an Engine Driver.  No Father's or Mother's names.

5. The family history is, he was born in Anglesey North Wales.
Somewhere between 1808 – 1814 give or take.

His wife Rachel Lewis; daughter of Stephen Lewis and Elizabeth Howell/s.
Birth 1834/36
Marriage 1851 aged 23 = born 1828 (If born in 1834 would have been only 17 years)
Arrival in Australia  1862 aged 27 = born 1836
Death 1884 aged 50 = born 1834 (Died in Victoria Australia)

In the 1861 census has Rachel Roberts nee Lewis & 2 sons in Brewer Street, Aberdare, Glamorgan South Wales AGED 26 = 1835. Do not know where Robert was.
Year range = 1828-1836

I hope I have not confused you.. SMILE

Ok where do we go from here?

You see the Brick Wall.. Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!!!!

Hi All,

Thanks for getting back to me so fast.

Unfortunately the marriage cert does not have a father's name for Robert. It does have Rachel's father as Stephen Lewis. There is no mention of a fathers name on anything I have here.

Yes, there were a lot of Robert Roberts born in Anglesey between 1809 & 1813.

That might be my Robert in Merthyr Tydfil on the 1851 census.  He would have been around 39 years old (Maybe).

I have Rachel (Robert's wife) and their two sons, Robert aged 7 and Stephen aged 2 living in Brewery St Merthyr Tydfil on the 1851 census. Unfortunately young Stephen died on-board ship in their way to Australia in 1862. I do not know what year Robert Roberts came to Australia.

The only other thing I know about Robert Roberts life in Wales is that he was an Engineer at the time of his marriage in 1851.

Cheers

Anglesey / Robert Roberts born between 1809 to 1813 Anglesey
« on: Monday 25 May 09 00:14 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

I have hit a HUGE brick wall.

I am researching my GGGrandfather Robert Roberts.

On his marriage cert 21 June 1851 (Aberdare, Glamorgan Shire South Wales), his age was 38 so he was born in c1813 Anglesey North Wales.

But, on his death cert 1888, his age was 79 which means he was born in c 1809 Anglesey North Wales..

On his marriage cert to Rachel Lewis, Robert was an Engineer and continued to be an Engine driver after arriving in Australia between 1859 and 1863 (date unknown)

I am hopeful someone could be able to help me work it out and/or point me in the right direction.
Also help with information on where I could look re; him being an Engineer in Wales between 1800-1870.

Kind regards

Anita in Australia  :)

Hi.

Ok, you have Sandgate Cemetery and Beresford crematorium (Beresfield) they are about 15-20 mimutes drive apart.

His plate is situated on Pool Wall L/15 6222 at Beresfield crematorium?

I will go there today and take a few photos for you and send them on when I get home.

Anita
