The Common Room / Re: Probate Orders (the last minute ones)

I had 5 this morning  :D to add to 2 last week. They are trickling out, it seems.

I ordered 63 in several batches. ;D
Half a dozen were instant deliveries.
Since then I've received 4. (2 post 1996 and 2 older ones).
There seems to be a glitch at the moment whereby they aren't showing the date they were first downloaded. (I had this with some wills a few years ago and they have stayed permanently available ever since)

edit: just got another one which has registered the download correctly.

Ah, I see. I was hoping for some kind of season ticket arrangement. But who needs that bulk access? I quess you only pay for what you take

There's at least one company out there systematically checking for legacies to charities.

I believe it's all or nothing, I don't think you get to choose what you take.

There's mention of a new "bulk access" fee. If this is set at a reasonable level I could cope, but I expect it will be set in the £1000's
Bulk access is not new. It's  a continuous electronic feed of every grant, you don't get to choose what you want. At the moment that is still £1.50 per will. (about £90k per quarter looking at rough figures)

If you order a will that you ordered once before, then it is delivered instantly (even if it's not a modern will)

Ask me how I found that out  ::)

GRO indexes are publicly available ( up to the most recent quarter) but again GRO have decided to restrict the coverage of their own on-line indexes, even though they have previously made the same data available through other means ( e.g. Ancestry and FindMyPast).

Do you know if they are going to update the online Deaths index beyond 2021?

2022 deaths are available now. Also births.

Some of my husband's ancestors were German who changed or anglicised their names during World War I.  One of them took the name of the woman he was living in sin with.  As this was her married name he effectively took the name of his mistress' husband which does seem bizarre.  They continued using this name even after they eventually married.

Technical Help / Re: Choosing a new Mobile phone

It's an unlocked phone that's not tied to a particular provider.

Sim free means you buy the phone without a sim card. You can put your old sim card in it if it is the right size.  (If it's the wrong size you have to go into your network phone shop and ask for a "sim swap" - they should be able to do it on the spot)

At the moment i have a Samsung Galaxy Fame, about 5 years old. I use Pay as you go. EE/Orange

I would like to buy one with more options--better camera--bigger keyboard--basically "more bells and whistles"  around the £150-200. price. or is that wishful thinking?

I replaced my similar vintage Galaxy Fame with a Huawei P10 Lite just before Christmas. I am very happy with it.  It seems like a huge step up. Currently available (sim free) at around £180 and probably ticks all your boxes.

Additionally my daughter has also now bought one to replace an iPhone 5 and she is also happy with it.
