Hi Cathy

I'm wondering if you ever found the original records about the marriage of Charles Janeway and Harriet nee Cooper, in Coombe Hampshire.  There was an answer to your 2010 post from a Vic Wise, quoting a transcription, but i haven't been able to find original, and  haven't had a response from Vic Wise.  I'm contacting you just in case you have subsequently found anything about this couple before they emigrated.

many thanks

Ruth

Suffolk / Re: Henry Dowling and the 1840s emigration to Tasmania and Victoria.

Hello.  I'm interested in finding out where Henry Dowling recruited from, and I wonder if you might be able to help?  I'm looking for the antecedents of a 27yo domestic servant called Susan Roach who arrived with him and his family in Launceston in November 1843 on the Henry, as part of the Bounty Scheme. (I'm a bit miffed to see that females received a bounty of £18 while males received £19 - I'm sure the women worked just as hard as the men AND they bore children . . .  :) )   I'm assuming he recruited her, along with some others on that vessel.   I have other information that indicates she was from Cornwall, which of course is the other side of England from Colchester.  Do you have any records of where and how Henry Dowling recruited?  Cheers, Ruth

Hi Cathy

These are the baptisms from a Combe Transcription. All children of Charles and Harriet

13JAN1828  ANNE JANEWAY

23MAY1830  GEORGE JANEWAY

25DEC1832  ELLEN JANNAWAY

26JUL1835  HENRY JANAWAY

This marriage at Combe

17NOV1825  CHARLES JANNOWAY to HARRIET COOPER

I can't find a baptism for Charles in Hampshire but did find
24NOV1805 HARRIET COOPER Baptised Wickham d/o William & Elizabeth COOPER. Wickham is not really very far from Combe.

It looks like they may have emigrated before the 1841 Census

Hope that helps

Hi Vic
Just wanting to check up on where you got the info for the baptisms and marriage at Combe, also the Wickham baptism?  Is there a particular church? And are there online records? (I'm in Sydney)   I haven't been able to find anything on Charles and Harriet's families back in the UK and I'm very keen to do so, I have a bee in my bonnet about where the name Soward came from!  Soward was Ann's middle name and pops up in every generation subsequently, including my Dad.
And yes they did come to Aus before the 1841 census, they arrived in Adelaide Aug 1840.  Ann died young and her hubby and children with George and his children eventually settled near Mount Gambier.  Ellen moved to Teralba near Newcastle as another cousin mentioned, and Henry migrated to Canada.  happy to share info if anyone's interested.
Looking forward to hearing from you
Cheers, Ruth

hello distant cousins.  Charles Janeway is my great great great great grandfather through his daughter Ann Soward.  I know that Charles and Harriet nee Cooper arrived in Adelaide on the William Mitchell on 27 August 1840 with four children including Ann and a son George

I'm wondering if you've found any family history back in Hampshire, who Charles and Harriet's parents were?

Cheers

Ruth

New Zealand Completed Requests / Re: Sutherlands in Christchurch 1860 +?

I checked out NZBDM and found Arthur Ernest Keating born 1878 (the right year for the 6yr old) Father John Keating and Mother Josephine Keating (another mistake ?). Marriage record for 1901 to a Annie Leith (which is interesting as John Joseph Keating married Christina Mary Leith), and a death record for 1936.
Trev

Just to raise another option for that 6yo . . .there is an 1879 Birth on BDM (1879/8065) for a Francis McKenzie, son of Isabella and father Not Recorded.   John Keating forfeited bail for drunkenness in October 1878 and was declared bankrupt in October 1879, so maybe amidst the stress of that, Isabella left him, gave the son her maiden name and her brother's fist name?  what do you think?

Hello

Trev, wondering if you found anything else about that Isabella Sutherland aged 22 who arrived in Lyttelton from Caithness on the Blue Jacket on 14 October 1866?  It all matches, doesn't it. Do you know if it's possible to get a manifest, find out any more info about her?
