Norfolk Lookup Requests / Re: Sophia GOWING b 1828 in Forncett
« on: Friday 24 June 16 21:04 BST (UK)  »
Hi Rachel,
Thanks for your reply. I'd forgotten about this. I'm glad to hear you sorted it out, even if it was just eliminating someone from your inquiries.
My ancestors were the Jacob Gowing & Elizabeth Lord I mentioned before, & their eldest daughter Hannah (Sophia Lauriel's sister, of course), who all remained in Norfolk. Hannah & Elizabeth are in my mitochondrial DNA line & I was tracing Sophia's family for other female line descendants (they seem to have finished on her grand-daughter's death in 1913, as far as I can tell).
Regards,
James

Hi Rachel,
If you're still interested... Sophia Gowing was baptised 29 Jan 1826 in Forncett St Mary parish church, the 3rd daughter of Jacob Gowing or Gowen & Elizabeth Lord. Whoever registered her death must have been guessing at her father's name & probably settled for John because that was her husband's name, but by coincidence Jacob's twin brother was called John (who was married to Elizabeth Lord's sister Harriot, then to Abigail Bell). Sophia seems to have adopted the name Lauriel in Australia. The only likely candidate I can find in the 1841 census is a Sophia Gowen, aged 15 & working as a servant in Feltwell, Norfolk. I hope that's of some belated help. Sophia was my great-grandmother's great-aunt.
Regards,
James

Moray (Elginshire) / Re: John Slorach - 1749; decipher help please COMPLETE
« on: Thursday 21 May 09 02:54 BST (UK)  »
Stuart & co,

This is my late entry:

John Lawfull Son to John Slorach & Jean Siveright in Glen
garrack was born the 12th & baptized this day witnesses John
Sandieson younger in New Mill Johns Wright Wilson & Steinson
Jean Stitchels Janet Milles

Initially I thought it was Stimson (also a version of Stevenson), but I have to agree with Forfarian that it looks more like Steinson, even though the n doesn't match others in the extract; it looks like the writer wasn't sure how to spell it or was worried about going off the edge of the page, so stalled in the middle of the word.

Stitchels (or Stitchils): all I'm confident about are the S, h, l and s. The first vowel seems more like his i than e, but what I reckon to be the second vowel is ambiguous. The other tall letters look slightly more like his uncrossed t than his looped and less vertical l. There is a place called Stichill, near Kelso in Roxburghshire, so that may explain its origin.

I'm pretty sure that's an s on the end of Mille. More importantly, there's an s on the end of John, to save him writing it 3 times: ie Wright, Wilson & Steinson were all called John, which explains the &. (The Scots at this time also have a tendency to put an s on a surname when there are 2 or more the same.) That means there are 4 Johns, not including the father and child; I recently saw a page of Scottish baptisms where almost every witness had the same forename as the corresponding child, so I suggest these Johns were probably all godfathers after whom the child was named, rather than necessarily relatives.

The Oxford Dictionary of English Surnames gives the alternatives Sievwright, Sivewright, Seivwright and Sevewright, but if you're using the Soundex on SP all of these and more should come up anyway. But you've probably done every possible SP search you can think of, so at least you might have an idea whether the families were established in the Keith area. Unfortunately the excellent Lands and People of Moray series of books doesn't seem to have stretched to Banffshire parishes, but the Moray archives in Elgin (their details are on the Moray Council website) will know what documents there are beyond OPR, so well worth contacting them for advice.

These are just my opinions so feel free to criticise, but I hope at least some of the ramble is helpful.

Cork / Re: Savage of Cork
« on: Tuesday 19 May 09 14:21 BST (UK)  »
continued (I pressed the wrong button!)

William Lunny Savage m. Catherine Neil
children:
3. Rebecca, b. 23 Oct 1890, Inishannon, Co Cork. m. 26 Sep 1918, Stainland par ch, Yorks, Robert McMaster (b. c. 1892). 1 son.
4. Frederick William, b. 12 Apr 1893, Inishannon, d. 2 Nov 1958 (Stainland?). m. 1st, 4 Oct 1919, Stainland par ch, Edith Annie Kaye (b. c. 1898, d. 1933). 4 children. Fred m. 2nd, Elizabeth Ellen Taylor.
5. Charles Edward, b. 28 Oct 1895, Pallastown, Co Cork. m. 4 Oct 1919, Stainland par ch (double wedding), Maggie Dixon (b. 1897?). 4 children. To Australia 1923 or '24.
6. Louise Frances, b. 19 May 1897, Irishtown, Co Kildare. m. 30 Oct 1919, Stainland par ch, Stanley Brookes (b. 1898?). 4 children.
7. Charlotte Elizabeth, b. 23 Aug 1903, Grange, Co Cork.
8. Catherine Maud, b. 7 Apr 1912?, d. 1988?. m. Thomas Eastwood.
9. Arthur, b. c. 1913.

William was variously a shop assistant, merchant's clerk & steward, but from the mid-1890's was a painter & decorator. Catherine's maiden name is sometimes given as O'Neill on the birth certs. I do have more on William & Catherine's grandchildren & beyond, but some, I know, are still alive & most I can't be sure about.

I am convinced that the John Savage mentioned by Samanthamsavage is a close relative of James; I don't have the relevant notes to hand, but I think he was also in the milling or shop keeping business, & Eva being b. in Fisher St is maybe more than a coincidence. I think they may have been originally from Co Fermanagh, which may strengthen their link to the Neil family.

Charlie & Maggie's 2nd son was b. Mar qtr 1923 in Halifax registration district, Yorks, but I'm fairly sure both appear on the 1924 Victoria Electoral Roll in Leongatha, Gippsland, hence my guess at their emigration date.

I am indebted to Ivan & Graeme for posting their pics on the Munster Fusiliers website. I recognised Fred immediately - my parents have the same portrait of him in 1917/18, as well as many others of the family.

I hope that's helpful & would welcome any additions/corrections.
Sorry about the glitch.

James
