Hi Millipede,

Many thanks for your help, yes I had investigated the Harris marriage but I haven’t gone down the death route yet.   My next step, thank you.   Like you say she could well have changed her name and I may never find her but I’m not about to give up yet.

She was living in Kings Cross and working in St Johns Court, Finchley Road in 1937.   Then after that there was some speculation that she was working and living in Golders Green.  But the authorities could not find her, although I don’t know the resources they had back then to find her.

No sign of her in 1939.  I got so excited when it was released, convinced I would now find her, but no.   The children had no contact with their mother and remained in care until they were of age.

Many thanks for your suggestions, it’s very much appreciated.

Hi,

Nearly 4 years ago I posted about the above lady and her brother Robert James Cowan.  Well it’s taken me 4 years to trace the brother but Dorothy still eludes me.  She was born 30 Jun 1909, St George in the East to Eliza Cowan nee Killingback.  Eliza died in 1910 in Colney Hatch, father is unknown.  I have social care records for Dorothy that show her whereabouts until 1937.  In 1938 a warrant was issued for her, for basically abandoning her children and not contributing to their keep. After this there is nothing.   I have spent a fortune and time searching birth certificates in case there were more children ( she was a bit of a naughty girl), marriage, death, immigration and countless other records all to no avail.   Can someone please help?

Hi Trish,

Thank you, that was the only one I found too, but like Geoff, I thought it was a long way to go.   I think my only option now, is next time I visit the UK, is make a visit to Lincolnshire archives.

Many many thanks everyone for your ideas and input

Thankyou so much everyone for your replies.   I checked on William Stanton, but I found his baptism record, parents John and Frances.    This is so frustrating as I know the link is there, I just can't find it.  Again thank you
Sally

Lincolnshire / Charles Smith born Creeton abt 1818

Hi,

Am desperate for some help please.

Charles Smith my 3x greatgrandfather states on all census he was born in Creeton Lincs.   I cannot find a birth record for him.   I've got his marriage cert and fathers name is left blank.   In 1841 he is living in Castle Bytham with a Robert Smith age 70, also living with them is Roberts daughter Frances with husband John Stanton and family.   All my Smith family come from Castle Bytham.   I've even obtained Roberts death cert in the hope of some info but no luck  The only thing I can think is Charles was illegitimate and Robert was perhaps his grandfather.   So I've worked forward from Robert he had 3 daughters who could potentially be Charles mother Elizabeth b.1798, Ann b.1801 and Alice b1802 and they were sent to the next parish to give birth.
All publications with births etc seem to end in 1812for Creeton.
Does anyone know if baptisms were still performed in Creeton after this date?  Even Lincs to the past have nothing.   I think I've tried every site going and have come up with nothing.
So any tiny little bit of info would be so appreciated.
Thanks
Sally
