Peonynon and Dan
Unfortunately, I can't add to what you have already.
My g.grandmother Emma Ridgley (1830-1913) was Daniel Ridgley's granddaughter and Solomon's niece.  However I've not yet investigated Solomon's family and that's why I can't add anything.
John Ridgley appears in the 1841 census in Bradenham which is where Emma was born.

Hi Dan Delion
I found quite a bit of information on the Ridgley's of Buckinghamshire at
http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=SHOW&db=hrohrer&recno=97411

I also found information on the Lacey or Lacy families on the Family Search site and have been able to go back to Henry Lacey born about 1572 in Princes Risborough, Buckinghamshire.

I hope that helps.

I'm very grateful to you for taking the time to check and let me know.

This man is the proverbial brick wall!!

I've just checked in the Pallot's Marriage Index 1780-1837 on Ancestry (UK) and found the following entry:

Rebecca Brown & George Goodwin.  Christchurch, Newgate, London. 1829.  The original image gives no further information other than the two names.

Could Rebecca Plumridge have been previously married to a Mr. Brown before marrying John George Goodwin in 1829?  The date is very close to the baptism of Charles George Goodwin in Eton on 21 April 1830.

Many thanks for that and it helps extend the Plumridge connection a little further.  I see that Lewknor is very close to where Rebecca Plumridge was born in Stokenchurch.

But the Goodwin mystery continues!

Hello

I have a copy of the baptism record of my g.grandfather Charles George Goodwin.  He was baptised in the Parish of Eton on April 21, 1830 (Page 128).  Would this be St. John the Evangelist?  I ask because his father is shown as George and his mother as Rebecca.  George's trade or profession is given as "Servant".  I have records tracing Rebecca Goodwin from this date to her death in 1880 but I cannot trace any record for George Goodwin after the baptism.

On the marriage certificate of his son, the father for Charles George is shown as "John George Goodwin" not simply "George Goodwin" but I have reason to believe that at this date - January 12th, 1852 - John George was dead and whoever had been asked for the father's name had more formerly given his full name, and not simply "George".   He was again described as a "Servant".  He does not appear in the 1841 or 1851 census and a search carried out for me by Bucks. FHS did not disclose any B.M.D. record.

On the 1911 census form, Charles George Goodwin's birthplace is shown as "Eton Colledge, Buckinghamshire" (sic).  The form appears to have been completed by the enumerator who may have heard "Eton" and assumed this meant Eton College.  But, of course, Eton College might well have been Charles' birthplace.  I wrote to the College Archivist but he was unable to help in ascertating whether John George might have been a servant in the College.

Has anyone any burial records or any other pertinent record and would be willing to check any entry for John/John George/George Goodwin for me?

Thanks

Jack

The reply I had from the Eton College archivist was as follows:
"We have no information on the servants who worked in the boarding houses or in the masters private residences.  The names of the very few staff who looked after the King's Scholars (a minority in the school) can be found in the accounts but we would have no information beyond the years they were paid i.e. nothing on dates or residence".

Thanks for the various links you've given me and I'll add a comment to the thread on St. John The Evangelist, Eton.

Thanks for the checkups.
I don't have the set of CD's for the NBI and if anyone has and could do a check, I'd be more than grateful.

Hi Jill
Thanks for that.

I found the reference and downloaded and saved the will, which was part of a set of other wills on about three pages.  There is no mention of any of the people we know and, despite difficulty reading the script, it seems that John Godwin servant to family named Bishop of Richmond Park, was, at that time, in poor health and was leaving £20.00 to his parents - after debts and funeral expenses were paid.  A month or so later, he had obviously passed away and probate was granted to his father Stephen.

So I doubt if this man was our man but it was an interesting find.
