Nathan, unfortunately, I have no info about James Pratt or Mary Maystone.  I'm sending you a PM.

Australia / A.B.C. in Perth 1949
« on: Saturday 15 October 11 15:51 BST (UK)  »
I have a 1949 newspaper article which indicates an ancestor was "a frequent contributor to this newspaper (Albany Advertiser), and to city papers.  Recently he had contributed regular sessions to the A.B.C. in Perth on English Sport."

Would someone know what "A.B.C." was in 1949?  I'd like to check into what he wrote.

Thanks,
Sue

At a poster's suggestion, I obtained the Military records for an ancestor who joined the VDC in Albany in 1942.  On the Service & Casualty Form it reads:
the date of the report, VDC then "Enlisted & T.O.S."
then a 2nd entry with a date the following year, 6th Btn and what looks like "S.O.S. and S/O 9 (2) (E)"
Handwritten on form is his age at Enlistment, age at Discharge, and
"Discharge due to Absence without Leave".
Does anyone have any idea what the T.O.S. is or the S.O.S. entry?

Thanks Gerry for the enlistment records suggestion - I've requested, & thanks Sylvia for the interesting websites.

Thanks so much for checking the electoral rolls.  If he was indicated as retired in 1943, he may never have worked at all in Australia.  I've seen the Trove references thanks.

I have an ancestor who immigrated from Malaya to Australia (Fremantle) in 1940 and died in West Perth in 1949 at age 60.  I know much about his early life already but hope to find his Occupation while in Australia.  He was unmarried, may not have owned property, and may have been a teacher there.  At some point he lived at Como, and at Middleton Beach (in 1942 when he joined the Volunteer Defence Corps), before he last moved to 70 King’s Park-road, West Perth.  He was almost always referred to with his middle name or initial; James Benjamin Carr, James B Carr, or Jas B Carr.  I would appreciate any suggestions as to where to look for occupation information.

Congratulations Sue!

You must have used the link to the Otago Nominal Index only moments after I put it up!

It should feel good to know that all your organizational work is paying off!  I looked at that posting because I didn't know what a 'nominal index' was and as these things go, I found the missing link that draws the pieces together  ;D
