Wow guys, thank you all for the input, it has helped a lot! The photo of the lads cleaning their rifles was taken in England I believe, as there is a photographer's stamp on the back and that stamp includes the location, 'Pirbright'. There is sadly no date. I figured it was the military barracks that he trained at. Another question... Len (Leonard) was born and raised in Worcestershire (Chipping Norton) but I heard, or read, somewhere that Coldstreamers are historically recruited from a particular route, and that doesn't include Chipping Norton. One other question in regards to that photo... I understand that the No. 15 Company is the Coldstream Guards band (and HQ) and I see words that look like '15 plat' written on the barrack hut. Could this mean that he was part of the band? And would a band member have been deployed overseas? Sorry if these are really dumb questions, but I am fairly close to totally ignorant of military matters.
Again, thanks for taking the time to answer my post!

World War One / Can anyone help identify the regiment/unit shown in this photo...

Hi! My Granddad, Len James, (b. 1900 Chipping Norton, England; d. 1972 Tasmania, Australia) was a member of the Armed Forces but I don't have many details around this.

My dad and uncle believe that Grandpa was a Coldstreamer. My dad also remembers some talk of Turkey. We do not believe that Grandpa participated in WWI active service.

I do also have a few photos that were in my grandmother's photo album, but I know nothing about military history, uniforms or the like. Can anyone help me?

Many thanks!

You guys/gals rock! Not only have you answered this question, but I've also learnt a new way to search for information - that being, to search for what/who's not there (absent voter lists)... I'd never have thought of doing that in a million (or at least a thousand!) years.

Many many thanks from a very happy newbie!

Good idea, Scrimnet, I will contact the Guards museum and see if anyone there can point me in the right direction. And now I have a starting point (3rd battalion - 1923) to give to them.

Thanks so much again!

Have a great evening  :)

Thank you both for your input!

Do you have any tips about the regiment or uniform they are wearing? With a name like Leonard James there are a few candidates (to put it mildly!) in the defence force records of the day and I don't have any regiment / service number nor anything other than my father's statemet that his dad 'was a coldstreamer'.

May seem like a dumb question, but am I correct in saying that Len does not have a medal ribbon on his uniform?

Thanks again! Sarah

World War One / WWI photo help - who/what/where/when?

Hello!
This photo from my grandmother's photo album shows my grandfather, Leonard James b. 28 September 1900 in Selly Oaks (England). He is seated in the first row, farthest to the left.

Grandpa James was one of nine children born to a fairly poor family in Birmingham, and the story goes that he joined the army (?) quite young and received most of his education there.

The uniform looks, to me, to be very tropical and the corrugated iron shed also suggests a warmer clime. My father says that Grandpa served as a Coldstreamer and spent some time in Turkey during the first world war. Could this photo be from that time?

Thanks so much!

Midlothian / Re: HUTTON, Edinburgh, ca 1792 - 1847

Hi again, I'm exactly the same! I get so excited when I see something that 'just may fit' that I somehow, not purposely mind you, overlook the facts that don't fit (wishful thinking is what my mother says). I choose to take it as a positive trait - though I'm not sure everyone thinks the same! Typically I figure out something is wrong when ancestry says 'the person you have chosen as mother was only 4 years old at the time of giving birth. Do you really want to confirm this fact.' Or something along those lines anyway!

Good luck with your search  :)

Hi cubbyhill,

An interesting conunmdrum without a doubt! But I think in this case your Mr HUTTON will be Mr David HUTTON as my ancestor was only about 16 at that time so it would be doubtful that he had £20 to lend, and just thinking about it, he probably would have had an issue legally speaking as he had not yet 'attained his majority'. Not sure, but....

The source I have used thus far for apprentice / merchant / guild details is from Scotsfind.org. They have a number of free databases including an extremely user-friendly series of PDF documents that have been transcribed from old records (don't want to even imagine how many hours it took - but am v.v.v. grateful!)
The direct link to the guild records pdf file is http://www.scotsfind.org/burgesses_access/burgesses.pdf

There are a lot of 'legal' documents relating to Edinburgh also available on the 'Open Library', for example, http://openlibrary.org/b/OL6315896M/Roll_of_Edinburgh_burgesses_and_guild-brethren_1761-1841

Hope that these are of use and good luck with your search! baardsgirl

Hi Nell,

Thanks for the reply. I hadn't seen David there, but I did seem him (or maybe another David Hutton) in the Edinburgh burgh's apprentices register. Certainly something to think about - may mean their father, for example, was also a merchant... hmmm.

Also, do you happen know where I can find out about the old boundaries? Midlothian, for example, defining which towns were included in that county...

Cheers
