Sadly no... not any more, but you've answered my question - he was working on the RAF base. Poor guy, just over from Ireland, three young children and gone  :(

World War Two / KIRKBY IN WW2
« on: Saturday 19 July 25 16:59 BST (UK)  »

Hello  :)  -  I'm working on a family tree and wondered if anyone could decipher the following Death Certificate.  The date is 1942 so I'm wondering if this man was doing war work?  The address of his death is Work Site, East Kirkby R.D.  Does that mean anything to anyone?  Was he working on building the aerodrome...??

I've taken out his name because he isn't 'mine'.

Many thanks, Selby

The Common Room / Re: Victorian London

 :)

Many thanks to you all, it’s given me food for thought.

My dad actually lived in a big house in Islington, the family shared it with an old lady and another couple. He remembered having two bedrooms at the top of the house and a kitchen in the basement which they mostly lived in. I wish I’d asked him how it all worked with the other people in the house.. sadly, too late now.

The Common Room / Victorian London

After going round and round the internet trying to find an answer - I've come to the clever people on RootsChat to see if you can help...

I'm researching a property - the house has four stories (its a town house in Islington, London).  The occupants were a variety of people renting rooms.

In 1911 it had three separate families, all living in two rooms each.  What does that mean?  How could each household cook? Did they share the kitchen? Where was the bathroom? If there wasn't one, how did they wash? One family was two sisters living together, the two other families comprised of a husband and wife with a child.  Did they use one room to sleep in and one to live in?

All the information I can find online refers to slums, people living on top of each other - but this wasn't the case.  All the residents had decent jobs, they moved out and upwards, they were just renting.

If anyone can point me in the right direction I would be more than grateful!!

Many thanks, Selby

London & Middlesex Lookup Requests / 1921 census
« on: Thursday 21 November 24 18:06 GMT (UK)  »

Hello  :)

I'm looking for someone on the 1921 census - William Attwood (born 1843 in Hammersmith - died 1929 in Hammersmith).  The family lived in North Kensington, around the north end of Latimer Road.

Any help with his address would be very gratefully received.  Many thanks, Selby

London and Middlesex / St Paul’s Road, Islington
« on: Tuesday 24 September 24 17:46 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

I’m currently researching an address in Islington. I can find the address (18 St. Paul’s Road) on early census returns, but I can’t find it in 1911 or on the 1939 Register.

Does anyone know if the address changed over the years? Or were the census returns lost/destroyed? I can find the bigger numbers but not number 18! Seems odd…

I don’t know who lived there (I’m trying to do the history of the house) so it’s all a bit hit and miss.

Thanks, Selby
