Derry (Londonderry) / Marriage Lookup Request - Mary Ann Lynn
« on: Monday 21 February 11 17:59 GMT (UK)  »
Greetings All,

Am at a bit of a dead end with Mary Ann Lynn, b. Limavady, 1896. She shows up in 1901 and 1911, working as a domestic servant in the Begley Household in Clooney.

I have spoken to an ageing relative about her who maintains that she had some five children but didn't actually marry, which strikes me as a little odd, given that this might have caused a bit of a stir in her part of the world a century or so ago.

Childrens names I have were Joseph, James, Gladys and Ronald if that links to anything.

A tentative request, I appreciate - but this site has never ceased to amaze!

Look forward to reading any ideas,

Yours aye,

Jonny

Wolfie,

Apologies for the long pause.

I'm pretty certain my ancestor is one of John Laws and Ann Todd's children - and not John and Ann in 1841, which was a very interesting red herring!

Durham / John Laws and the Two Anns

If anyone I can throw any light on this one, I'll be very grateful.

John Laws, born 21 Apr 1793 in Sunderland. Married Ann Todd (b. 1789, Houghton le Spring) in 1811.

Two sons, Robert (1812) and George (1814).

John and Ann appear in the 1841 Census in Sunderland - he is a shoemaker...

But, another line of investigation I am working on sees John marrying Ann Gourley (b. 1796, Sunderland) in 1816. This wouldn't be obvious in the 1841 records...

They had another son - again called George (!) in 1816 - which is where it gets suspicious...

All ideas, clues (facts even) welcome - will prevent premature baldness, too.

Thank you,

Jonny

So maybe I should look for an Alice SHAW or YOUNGER in 1881? If she was around then...

Mary Ann Younger (Alice's Mother) was indeed married to Henry Shaw (A Scot, b. 1829 Inverkeithing). They had a daughter, Sarah Ann, b, 1860. Henry died in 1866.

Mary Ann Younger then married John Laws in 1868, I think. Alice must have arrived in before Mary Ann's death (recorded in several other people's trees as 12 Sep 1870 - I have seen a cert) - so there is a childbirth theory...

I am less certain about Alice's birth date now!

Her father (the widower) said she was 'about 5 months' at the beginning of April 1871 - which means she was born before Christmas...

So she's probably this one:

Births Sep 1869
Laws  Alice    Gateshead  10a 722

And nowt to do with Auckland at all.

Hmmn...

AVM,

I don't have any more info on the birth - I can see the one in Auckland. John Laws (father) was born in "Iveston" - but my knowledge of Co Durham is a bit limited. Does 'Auckland' Registration District refer to Bishop Auckland?

I may have to dig a bit further into the Grandparents.

Thanks,

Jonny
