My grandparents were on Cambridge Grounds on occasions in the 1920's.   John (Jack) Whiting with his wife and family Mary Ellen Whiting.  They were travellers with the fairground

Yes I realise that but unfortunately I don't have any other information.  I just thought I'd throw it out there to see if anyone knew anything.

I'm trying to find information regarding Johnnie Bailey who was apparently killed in an accident on the fairground.  I'm not sure of the date but think it may have been in the Yarmouth area as that's where the family came from.

I'm still trying to find information about John Ernest Whiting born about 1880.  He was a travelling showman in the Sheffield area until his death in 1946.  The 1911 census gives him as being born in Deptford, London, but I cannot find his birth registered in that area.  Does anyone else have any other information about him - he's my grandfather on my dad's side, but unfortunately my dad and most/all of his brothers and sisters are now dead, so they cannot help.  I did start this search on this site a couple of years ago but have still not got any further.

Thanks Cheryl, I'll do that, it's no wonder we can't find people.  Finding names is difficult enough as it is.  ::)

Trying to find census information seems very hit and miss.  I have a copy of the census form filled in by my grandfather John Ernest Whiting stating that he was living in a caravan on Bamforth Street, Penistone Road, Sheffield in 1911 with his wife and two children.  However, if you go on the 1911 official census site and search for this, it comes up with nothing.  So no wonder we can't find anything at times. ???

Hi jeffgg
As far as I'm aware, Harriet Whiting married Robert West Oadley in Belper and they had 5 children.  Charles West (1889-1931), Harriet West (1891), Elizabeth West (1894), Robert West (1896) and Flora West (1899).  Harriets parents were Samuel Whiting and Hannah Hoult.  Samuel was a photographer and travelled with the fairs.  Harriet and Robert either ran or owned a fairground and travelled around the Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire areas. I think that Robert West Oadley was convicted of a murder and that Harriet owned the steam engine "The Lord Kitchener".
