Cornwall Completed Lookup Requests / Re: Jolly Family from around Conwall
« on: Sunday 09 April 17 16:20 BST (UK)  »
HI
Many Thanks for the info sorry for being little blank but what does the "Shop" mean did they have a shop or does this mean home
What my Grandfather told me many years ago that there was some Blacksmiths in the Family and one of the Family set up a Blacksmith on the West Coast of New Zealand

My understanding of the word "Shop" in relation to places in Cornwall, is that they refer to blacksmith's shops. There are lots of places with the word Shop in the name - for example, close to St Columb Minor we have Gummows Shop, but there are plenty of others. Once a settlement builds up around the Smithy, then that takes the name.

Cornwall Lookup Requests / Re: Flamank/ Flamock

Perranzabuloe is the parish based around Perranporth on the North coast. Quite a large parish.

We have a Flamank memorial in St Enoder churchyard. I recall speaking with someone about the Flamanks some years ago - think they were in Oz. They had paid to have this memorial erected to their ancestors. I believe they were all from the St Enoder area - but it isn't that far to Bodmin from here to be honest, so there may be some connection.
I have, in St Enoder -
Elizabeth Jane died 1882 aged 24. Died shortly after daughter.
Kathleen died 1882 aged 3 months. Dau of Elizabeth Jane
Richard Henry died 1936 aged 86
All are on the same memorial as mentioned.

There are several others without headstones etc. Some from the outskirts of the parish, heading towards Bodmin.... Spellings are Flamank and Flammank!

That's great thanks - Are you an OPC?

I am. For St Enoder, Newlyn East and Perranzabuloe. But I transcribe for various things as well as the OPC project.

Flammick, Flamick, Flamack - I have seen all sorts of variants whilst transcribing Cornish parish records. Guess that it is down to accents and lack of literacy.

Cornwall / Re: I would love to hear from anyone tracing the name TREZISE
« on: Monday 24 October 16 22:37 BST (UK)  »
It is a fairly common surname in parts of Cornwall.

I can't see any baptisms or marriages involving David and Sophia/Josepha sadly. I checked the OPC database, but nothing. Nothing on the BMD records either for the marriage. Sorry

There are a number of Trezise baptisms in St Agnes parish around the period in question but none in Kenwyn parish.

Could you give the area where your Trezise ancestor lived?  I have some Trezise/Tresize etc mentions in parish records for the parishes I look after as the OPC (St Enoder, Newlyn East and Perranzabuloe), so if from here I may be able to help

Cornwall / Re: West End Drapery Stores Truro

The only picture of a drapery in Truro I can find is of a place called Webb & Co.
Not sure where it was - but it looks a bit like what is now Waterstones.
The photo is in the book entitled "Bygone Truro" by Sheila Bird.
