Thanks merjones.
Hogan was 45 yo in 1880.  Therefor he was born in 1835.

My interest is I am trying to find a brother of my gg grandfather, born in 1835, emigrated to Australia in '38 with his mother Johanna and brothers Francis and Bartholomew.  His father (William) died around 1837 in Ireland

Both William and Bartholomew have disappeared, no records of marriage or death.  I am supposing he went to America in the gold rush, stayed and settled. If we can find the parents of the Pennsylvanian William, this will either confirm he is my William, or confirm that he is not.

If his parents were William and Johanna from Co. Limerick then I am in luck otherwise  I continue the search.

This is fun, eh!?

William is identified as living in "Residence:  1880 in Oakland, Susquehanna, Pennsylvania"
He is married and has a daughter Johanna.

I am trying to identify his parents. Were they William Hogan and Johanna Tierney?

Thanks Kriss, I knew about the Palestine, but the insolvency is news.  All his children born in the 40's were born and baptised at Campbelltown, so possibly an address of George Street may suggest another James Florence?  I know of two other James Florence, one of which was located in the Northern Rivers.

Any thoughts?
Regards
Philip

Australia / James Florence McCARTHY - NSW

James was the son of John McCarthy and Catherine Gaffney.  With Elizabeth McCormick and infant son arrived in NSW in 1842 and settled initially in Campbelltown.  He was a carpenter. Several children later in the early 1850s he moved to Blackmans Point on the Hastings River, and then to Clifton in Port Macquarie where he was known to ba a grazier.  .  In the 60's he moved to Kempsey  and then in 1871 was appointed the police magistrate in the Bellinger River district.  He died in 1875.

I am seeking any information at all, but particularly why he went to Kempsey.  There is a suggestion he was a newspaper publisher of either the Macleay Independent (with son-in-law Frank Aria) or the Macleay Herald.

Anyone know anything?

John McCarthy and Catherine Gaffney had at least two sons.  One emigrated to Australia in 1842 (James Florence and my g grandfather) and the other emgrated to America at around the same time.  My family lore has it that the American brother is the father or grandfather of Senator McCarthy, but I have no idea of which Senator, and no knowledge of the emigration, birth or any other details.

Can any one confirm the role of John McCarthy or Catherine Gaffney in the ancestry of either of the US Senators?  I would be very grateful for any assistance.
