Renfrewshire / CAMERON/HIGGINS CONNECTION
« on: Tuesday 03 January 12 10:49 GMT (UK)  »
In STILL fathoming my nan's story, I have a new conundrum. Mother, Matilda Kelso married Father David Higgins in Greenock. They had their children between moving from Greenock to Chesire and back again. David disappears from the 1901 census & his brother Andrew becomes the new head of family. THEN in 1911 there is a William Cameron who had been visiting/living with the family in 1901 census and he becomes the new head of the family! They have 2 more girls.
William was listed as being a relative in the 1901 census and I cant work out in which way he was actually related (he did live in Greenock as well originally). My nan obviously took on Williams name as we knew her as Ellen Cameron! Can't find a marriage certificate between them and yet Matilda is now listed as a Cameron in 1911.
Can anyone help ?? Totally confused STILL. :-X :D

Hi Englandphil
Yes, Eric Priestly married my Nan, Ellen Cameron in February 1918, Eric had been in the soldier's hospital recovering from wounds where he was nursed by Ellen.  They only had two weeks together before he went back to the war.  Sadly, In June of that year, Eric was shot and killed in action.  There is an article in the Widnes Weekly News in March that tells the story of the funeral.
My nan later met my Grandad, Angus Alexander Reid and followed him out to Australia where they married in Bendigo on Jan 18th 1920. Eric was an absolute hero and deserved the medals. If you troll thru previous posts of mine you can read all about it. Ok?

Barbara, the tricky bit is this.... Nan had been known on both wedding certificates as being born in Leith, Scotland and her maiden name as Cameron.
She also had noted that her Dad's name was David Cameron, an inn keeper.
I found the Higgins link when looking for her Mum: Matilda Kelso.  So many things add up, but there are almost as many that dont!!
GOOD LUCK WITH IT ALL! :D

Hi Barbara. Yes, the whole thing is very confusing. I did have a few posts and replies on another part of Rootschat but I dont know how to put that link with all of the info on to this part.
My elusive Nana was Ellen (1898)
1901 Census shows   David Higgins (30)
                                    Matilda Higgins (26)
                                    Alexander Higgins (5)
                                     Ellen Higgins (2)
                                     Mary Higgins (3 mths)
Their address was Cheadle Chesire

1911 Census  shows   Alexander Higgins (41)
                                    Matilda Higgins (35)
                                    Alexander Higgins (15)
                                    Ellen Higgins (13)
                                    Agnus Higgins (12)
                                    Mary H (10)
                                    Frances H (8 )
                                    Matilda H  (6)
                                    Catherine (4)
                                    Marget (5 mths)
AND                              WILLIAM CAMERON (34)
THEIR ADDRESS WAS NOW Stockport, Chesire

Hi confusion reigns on my research of my Nana's family. Her mother was Matilda Kelso & father David Higgins who married in Scotland in 1893. The couple & 3 children Alexander, Ellen & baby Marymoved down to Cheadle Chesire for the 1901 census. They then have another five children in Chesire. However, the father's name is now Alexander (I suspect his brother). Also in 1901 family had a boarder - a William Cameron born Greenock Scotland.
Now, Matilda gives birth to another 2 girls  in 1912 & 1915 but under the name of Kelso/Cameron.
My nan wed an Aussie soldier in Jan 1918 & listed her address as being Chesire. He was killed and had the funeral party from 16 Margaret St Widnes. Both Alexander & Ellen appeared in the Widnes Weekly news in 1918 titled Brother and Sister go to war. Nan's name on her wedding certificate 2 years later in Australia was Priestly. Why cant I find any trace of David & Alexander Higgins? Marriage certificate for Matilda & William?  BIGGEST TRICK is Nana said her father's name was David Cameron!!  The kids all worked at Musratts, ICI and very well known in the neighborhood. Any one help me sort this out please?

Hi Swino65  I agree we must be related because Matilda's elder sister Ellen was my grandmother. She passed away in October 1988 in Australia but I am really keen to follow her family tree right back to the beginning.  Does that make us both cousins of Jimmy?

Hi was wondering if anyone out there can help with the history of Mr William Cameron who married my great grandmother Matilda Kelso (maiden name)/Higgins (first marriage) and bore two children with her. He lived with Matilda, her husband David and their other children as a boarder before marrying her post 1900. They lived at Margaret Street Widnes. Any help with his beginnings, family etc?

Ta for your quick reply Martin. I am so excited to find this link as well. Maybe, as the site moderator has suggested, we should continue swapping info on the private  messages board. You can access this by clicking on my user name on the side of the posting & then send me a message from there . I am the grandaughter of Matilda Pountain's eldest sister, Ellen. I will be thrilled to see & hear info on my nan's 'mystery family'  Sadly, at the moment, I am dealing with my dad's palliative care, so if I dont answer quickly you will understand why. Ok?  Would love to know where you guys live!
