Thanks Bilge,

Thanks again, Bye for now, Jess

Hello,

I wonder if anyone here can help me.

Are you related to or do you have any connection/information about,
    Robert G B Harrison, seaman, b.1911 Newport, Monmouthshire?

Robert was married to Enid Y Evans and they had at least one child, Pamela, born in early 1943, just after his death in late 1942.

I am researching the story of a ship wreck, the loss of the Garthpool, (a four masted square rigged barque, last deep water sailing ship to fly the British Flag) which struck the reefs off the Cape Verde Islands on November 11th, 1929.

All the crew survived and they shared a bit of an adventure for several weeks on the islands; one of the passengers was my great grandfather, Christopher Bedford Steel, on board for the experience of the voyage.

I am working on discovering who each of the crewmen were, where they came from, their experiences and what became of them after the Garthpool adventure.

I have already been in contact with numerous relatives of the last Garthpool crew; I would love to discover any information about Robert G B Harrrison, especially any notes/diary entries/anecdotes regarding the Garthpool story.

I also hope to discover a photo of him, as I have a growing collection of crew photos and I may well be able to identify him in my collection.

Any information would be most appreciated.

I look forward to hearing from any forum members,

Thank you

Dear Phyl,

Thank you very much for your emails and sorry for the confusion, I think there's a glitch in the system as I did get your emails and I replied straight away to your first message the other day but my reply may never have been sent!

That's very annoying if that's still the case so I've sent you several messages just now, one as a reply the other as a private message, hoping one gets through!  I'm trying this just in case there's problems (or maybe it was a temporary glitch?)

Anyway, I have been doing a bit of searching of Ancestry and found some very interesting things about Emile (of Mauritius's) children; two of whom followed in his footsteps, as stewards then ship's cooks and bakers.

He had two other children, I don't know whether you know of them; John, born 1919, and Francis Gerard Louis, born 1921.

Arthur Emile Louis was the son of Rose A Maye (I've worked it out; Rose was Rose A Maye; oh, I spent ages explaining that in my 'lost' email, the one you didn't get!
   The clue was on a passenger list I had seen before, wherein the address of someone they knew in the UK was listed and she was called 'Maye' and you see I found Arthur's birth record, and it indicates Maye as his mum's surname; so that makes Rose, Rose A Maye!)

Anyway, so Emile and Rose had 4 children together, though I think Arthur Thomas, born 1917 in Hong Kong, may well have died young, I'm not sure though.

Well, I hope you get one of my messages and I look forward to learning more stories about Emile; its lovely to know there are some great stories about him in the family.

I'd love to find out more about his 'swag' bags and such like; there were so many great characters aboard the Gathpool!

All the best,

Bye for now,

Jess

The Common Room / The Loss of the SV Garthpool 11th November 1929
« on: Thursday 17 June 10 06:54 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

I wonder if anyone can help me.

I am researching the story of a ship wreck, the wrecking of the Garthpool on Armistice Day in 1929; all the crew survived including my great grandfather, Christopher Bedford Steel, (1907-1943), who was a passenger/apprentice, on board for the experience of the voyage.

I have so far found a lot of articles, references in lots of books, and various documents from ancestry as well as many photos; as well as looking for any more detail about the whole story, from Boa Vista, where they spent a few rough days, to being wined and dined on Sao Vincente, in the town of Mindelo, to being shipped home as distressed British seamen, I am also looking into each of the crew members stories, who they were and what they experienced and what became of them.

I have already got a good idea of several individuals stories (The Captain, passenger Peter Kerr Smiley, Apprentice Tom Oates, Stan Hugill, Shantyman, etc etc) but I'm always discovering and learning more.

Any information would be most appreciated

Thanks

Dear Tazzie,

I have just revisited the census and I realise something I should have spotted long ago...

I have looked at census records for Ridley Smith many times; in the search results there are 2 Ridley Smiths in 1841:

One with Margaret Lisgo in Newcastle, which matchs my contacts information
(my distant cousin Tracy Jaleel has been a great currespondent on the tree and filled in many gaps for me on this side of the tree about Wilsons/Bowmans and such like)

But then there's the Ridley with Elizabeth the Irish woman....her age in 1841, 55, is wildly differant from 1861 (87!) but the crazy thing is I've looked at these census entries many times and I didnt work it out or didn't see the major flaw in all this....another thought dawns on me....maybe I ignored that 1st one , the Ridley and Margaret, maybe I failed to look...yes, I think so because that's how my confusion emails with Tracy began....

I'd write...I found he's married to this Irish woman called Elizabeth but on the tree he's married to Margaret Lisgo! Ahhhhh...

There are TWO Ridley's, two differant families and the correct one is Ridley and Elizabeth (unknown surname) because the next link down is my next ancestor called Susanna and she's with them in 1841, and subsequently it all makes perfect sense in 1861 (though wrongly listed as a wilson, that's just a census error) because she IS her mother and mother-in-law to husband Joseph Wilson! Utter madness, I missed this....!!!

It's crazy I didn't think it through....so now I do not believe Margaret Lisgo is any relation, but now I have this unknown Irish woman.....

Anyway, I've made mistakes before but this mistake was confused by the seemingly accurate information of my cousin who made this huge largely accurate (I think!?!) tree but she's got it wrong, clearly....

Anyway....I'm going to try and solve this mystery somehow presently....

Well, take care

Bye for now

Dear Tazzie,

Thanks for your reply. Do you have any record of an Elizabeth Wilson (possibly nee Liscoe or not Wilson, but Liscoe ((married name?)) born 1775 in Ireland?

I have this mystery entry on a census;

In a family of Wilson's, headed by Joseph and Susannah, of Cumberland and Northumberland in 1861, there is a;

Elizabeth Wilson, 87, Mother in Law of Ireland

But this can't be right because Susannah's mum was Margaret Liscoe, no sign of her middle name being Liz, etc. and the age is odd too...

This leads me to think was this Margaret's mum, so making her a Liscoe, but ony by marriage or a much older sister who also married a Wilson??

Anyway, I am at the LMA all the time, my only way to get on the internet frequently so I could look up some info for you sometime.

Gotta rush

Bye for now

Jess

Hello,

Further to my interest in Lisgo/w/e (etc.) I would like to know if any one is researching Fothergill Robinsons.

The earliest marriege I have is;

William Robinson---1784------Eleanor Fothergill
Bookseller of Liverpool

Then my ancestors are;

William Fothergill Robinson (1802-1870, Broker/Proprietor, Liverpool)
Arthur Robinson (1843-1887, Banker/Broker South American Bank, Liverpool)
Ethel Mary Robinson (I am descended from her son, Christopher Bedford Steel)

I'd really like to know about William and Eleanor, as I don't know their dates of birth and where exactly they came from, only that William was;

'A Dalesman who came down from the Lakes to Liverpool...'

Also, any information on Atkinsons of Liverpool, as folllows;

Christopher Atkinson----------Susannah Wilkinson
Job unknown (info please)    (Parents; Mark Wilkinson & Jane Whitehead)
                                              ((Ancestry in Saddleworth & area, Yorkshire))

Christopher Atkinson------Ellen Sutton
b.1807                              (daughter of a Cheshire Farmer, Peter Sutton)
American Hide Merchant
He travelled many times to Charleston, South Carolina (about 32 crossings)

Mary Susan Atkinson-----Arthur Robinson ((as mentioned above)

Any information would be great, thanks.

Bye for now

Hello,

I'm new to this site but I've been researching my family tree for over 4 years.

For starters, I'm looking at this rather intreiging name Liscoe or Lisgo or Liscow; the spelling varies but basically I'm wondering is it Irish?

I've read a little from some postings at this website to indicate some Irish connection but you see my relation was born in Ouserburn, Newscastle area.

Here are the details;

Margaret Lisgoe/Liscoe (etc.)

Born 1801 in Ouseburn, Newscastle

Married 1822 Ridley Smith, of Hexham, Northumberland at All Saint, Newcastle Upon Tyne

They had about 6 children including;

Susannah Smith---who married---Joseph Wilson

And I am descended as follows;

Mary Wilson----John Bowman
                        (Police sergeant of Darlington, d.1891)
                         ((Of Wigton, Cumberland))

Margaret Annie Bowman----m----Thomas Hart Topham
b.1875 Darlington                       b.1853, Manchester

They had Ivy Topham in 1913 in Catterick, nr. Richmond, Yorkshire

Ivy Topham----Christopher Steel
Alison Steel---Peter Steer
My Mum
Me

And information on any of the other names in this part of my tree would also be most appreciated, especially Topham.

Thanks

Bye for now
