The Common Room / 1871/1881 Census Help Please
« on: Tuesday 07 January 25 14:06 GMT (UK)  »
I am looking for Margaret Mulligan on the 1871 Census. She was born c.1859 in Belfast, Ireland. Her parents were William Mulligan [1830-1907] and Jane McCutcheon [1832-1903], both born in Ireland.

Margaret married Michael Grant on 5th February 1883 at St Andrew’s Church, Ancoats, Manchester. Her surname was written as Mullin and they were living at 6 Catherine Street.

I have her on the following censuses:-

1861 Scotland Census
14 Alma Street, Govan, Lanarkshire
with her parents and older sister, Mary Mulligan
Parish: Govan; ED: 10; Page: 21; Line: 6; Roll: CSSCT1861_114

1881 England Census
42 Peel Street, Chorlton-on-Medlock, Manchester
with her husband Michael Grant and sons, Thomas and Michael
Class: RG11; Piece: 3932; Folio: 58; Page: 41;

[She was recorded as married even though they didn’t marry until 1883]

1891 England Census
25 Bradshaw Street, Hulme, Manchester
with her husband Michael Grant and 5 children
Class: RG12; Piece: 3196; Folio: 46; Page: 3;

1901 England Census
25 Bradshaw Street, Hulme, Manchester
with her husband Michael Grant and 6 children
Class: RG13; Piece: 3708; Folio: 67; Page: 4

1911 England Census
20 Gay Street, Hulme, Manchester
a widow with 4 children and son-in-law

She died in 1914 and was buried in Southern Cemetery.

I am also looking for her parents in 1871 and 1881. They appear with Margaret in Scotland on the 1861 Census and then:-

1891 England Census
4 Shepley Yards, Manchester
Class: RG12; Piece: 3238; Folio: 37; Page: 7;

1901 England Census
Chorlton Union Workhouse, Withington, Manchester
Class: RG13; Piece: 3673; Folio: 177; Page: 8

They both died in the Workhouse and are buried in Southern Cemetery.

Cheshire / Re: Marriage Help - Charles Henry Prince COMPLETED THANKS

Thanks. I had a look at street view and found number 5 but there is a huge bush in front of it so not helpful. Its quite close to the junction with Trafford Road. There is a lot of new development and I am not hopeful the house will still be there.

Yes I noticed that there were several families recorded as living at Thornhill, even in the earlier censuses.

I am wondering if they were a small group of terraced houses, and the group was called Thornhill. I think the 1939 Register is the first time I've seen a number.

A friend of mine who lives in the village is going to have a wander down when he gets chance and see what's there.

This is great thanks. I wasn't expecting a cremation.

They've got his wife as Edna again. I'm second guessing myself now having just confirmed her as Emma.

I think I've found it!

Managed to get on FindMyPast to do an address search. Thornhill isn't listed but its on Heyes Lane in Alderley Edge and at number 5 is an Emma Prince, who is a widow. Born 18th Dec 1887.

So the marriage is 2nd qtr 1927 Blackburn 8e 812 Charles H Prince and Emma Vernon.

The newspaper has misprinted Emma's name as Edna twice, in 1928 and 1933!

Thanks so much for everyone's input. I can move forward with this now.  :)

Is Edna still around in 1939?  If you can find her on the 1939 register (she might still be at the 1933 address if you're lucky) her DoB might enable you to find a birth registration.  GRO index gives full names as well as mmn.

Jane :-)

Thanks Jane. I've been looking at the 1939 but haven't found anything. I have been struggling with FindMyPast today so haven't done an address search yet.

In which newspaper is the 1933 death announcement for CHP?

Its in the Alderley & Wilmslow Advertiser 17th November 1933. Its very brief.

"PRINCE On November 11th 1933 at Thornhill, Alderley Edge, CHARLES HENRY husband of Edna PRINCE"

I've been looking for a burial and so far have ruled out Alderley Edge Cemetery [where is was living and burial place of his son Arnold by his first wife] and St Bartholomew's Churchyard [where his parents were buried]. I think St John's Church, Lindow in Wilmslow is likely as that's where his first wife was buried but haven't found anything to confirm yet.

Do you have access to newspapers - the Alderley & Wilmslow Advertiser, 17 Feb 1928, names him as the "the plaintiff" in a court case. There is reference to " ... the lady who is now his wife ..." and " ... Edna Prince, wife of the plaintiff gave evidence ...".

Narrows down possible marriage date.

'the lady who is now his wife' relates to the defendants wife and not Edna Prince.

Yes you are right, however, further down in the article it mentions Edna Prince as the plaintiffs wife giving evidence.
