The Common Room / Re: Access to medical record

Hi LizzieW, I was sad to read your g uncle had been in an asylum for so long, had he been born later things might have been very different for him.

If i´m only allowed a copy of the entry page and the first few entries that would be alright to begin with. As he was in the asylum for about a year before his death there may not be very much.

I hope you will be allowed more info now that time has passed.

Thanks Dawnsch, i´ll get in touch with them. I didn´t know the access restriction also applied to the  last entry in the relevant register, hope i´ll be lucky though.

Thanks very much for the information Janan, much appreciated. It´s easier than I first thought so I feel more optimistic.  I have his death certificate so I know the causes of death and they are sad reading, however, we would like to know more.

The Common Room / Access to medical record

I would like to see the medical record for my great grandfather who died at The London County Asylum, Banstead, in 1915. Would I be able to see the record under The Freedom of Information Act and how would I go about it? I live abroad and am not planning to go to London again until after the summer so all contact would have to be either on the net or post.

I think this question as been posted on the forum before but I can´t find it. Grateful for any help, ideas etc.

Hello eglus, thank you for your reply. I am researching my auntie´s (my  father´s sister in law) family tree. Her grandfather was Robert John Steinson born 1840 or 1841 in Croydon but I can find no record of his birth. He changed his surname to Steinson Castle then just Castle. He died in 1871. His grandson, my auntie´s father, wasn´t keen on being told he looked Jewish, I don´t know how much he knew about his grandfather as his mother died while he was still young. That´s all I have to go on really. However interesting family research is it does cause a lot of speculation and head scratching!

If a Jewish boy was born in 1840-1841 would it have been possible to register his birth using only his Hebrew name? I´m afraid I don´t have any idea what that Hebrew name could have been.
