Hampshire & IOW Lookup Requests / Re: John Compton - Born Grately 1806

Hi Susan

Don't worry about it - I have no idea how to do it either. Would this have been something you may have sent me ages ago?  I have a box of things which I know includes some photos. Once I get a minute I intend going through it to see what it actually holds. I packed up work about 5 years ago, and thought I would have loads of time, but it turned out quite the opposite. My son Gary had a stroke - he was 49 - he lives alone and has carers but still needs help from me. Then my son David had a complete breakdown - the last person one would expect - and was then diagnosed with Fibromyalgia, so is still not working. My 89 year old husband has Alzheimers. I seem to spend my time in and out of doctor's surgeries, and hospitals!! I wanted to be a nurse when I left school - my Dad was not happy about it, so it didn't happen. He used to say "be careful what you wish for". I don't mind, as at least they are all still here, so things could be a lot worse.
Where are you living now?  I have lived in Horsham all my life. It has changed a lot over the years, and has become "a very large building plot". New houses and flats are being squeezed in, and large estates rising everywhere. Problem is we do not have the schools, doctors, dentists, etc etc to cope with all of the newcomers, and the countryside is vanishing.
All the best
Jill

Hi Susan
We have had contact in the past - many years ago. I live in Horsham, West Sussex. My father was Frederick Aubrey Compton, bn 1910 Petersfield, son of Allen Aubrey bn Porton, Wilts in 1882.
I know I have Annie Mildred Compton, Gordon Kitto & Phillip Kitto in my tree, so would be grateful for any other details you have. I also visited Lockerley, Amport, Chitterne, Grateley etc, some years ago.
I am not sure how large your "word document" is, but can it be done as an attachment?
Like you I got involved with doing other family names, and for friends, plus family commitments, so the Compton tree has been much ignored in recent times.  I see that Claudia Boorman has put  updated details on this year - www.boormanfamily.ca/trees/compton     -  it's good to hear from you again
Regards Jill

Hello Freddy
I don't think we have ever had any contact, and I have not looked at RootsChat for some years. I have not looked at the Compton family tree due to family commitments. John Compton was my 2x Gt Grandfather, bpt 10th Feb 1805, at Grateley. I realise you have had years to probably finalise your tree. Sandra(Australia), and I have been in touch for several years, but I have not heard from Susan, or others that I had contact with. I imagine by now you have had photos of people and places involved, such as the Post Office etc., which I visited along with Grateley, Chitterne, Urchfont, Amport etc.
I am not at all sure where you fit in, so would love to know.
Kind regards
Jill Wrighton, nee Compton

Hi kerryb
Thanks for your reply. I have all the info on Robert, and his children etc, but am trying to establish the relationship between him and several others, who I think are probably siblings, but possibly cousins. I have been unable to trace who the parents of Robert are. All of these possible siblings, ( Mary, William, Nehemiah etc had children baptised in the Cuckfield Providence Chapel). There have been Bowers in Cuckfield, inc I seem to recall at the Manor House, way back to the 1600's, but again have not tied them in with my family. The family have also always had connections with Southwark, and two are  quite well known painters of Victorian scenes.
Many thanks for your interest
Regards
JW

Sussex / BOWERS
« on: Wednesday 06 October 10 15:48 BST (UK)  »
My 3x Gt Grandfather was Robert Bowers, Bn Ifield, Sussex in 1788.
I am trying to establish if William bn c1807, & Nehemiah bn c1805, and Stephen in 1796 ( all at Ifield, and listed as shoe/bootmakers) were siblings, with a possible sister Mary who married a James Mitchell at Ifield in 1818. I have been unable to find parents for any of them, so it would seem likely.
A John Bowers married a Mary Edwards at Horley ( very close to Ifield) in 1760, and  was also a shoemaker, so may be their Grandparents - or even at a long shot the parents, with earlier unknown children. Any addition info gratefully received.
