The Common Room / Where is Aston?
« on: Thursday 28 December 06 05:03 GMT (UK)  »
In a photo Album which belonged to my great, great, grandmother, Eliza Nicholls nee Banks, is a photo of a middle aged gentleman who I think is possibly one of her brothers.

The photo was taken by "Tippetts "
                                         8 Lozells Rd
                                         Aston.
To help me to try to determine who the gentleman is, is there someone who is able to tell me where Aston is situated?

Thank you,
Narelle

Dear Karenlee,  bearkat  and Casalguidi,

Thank you very much for your help.

I will check out those sites.

Now I must figure out where to go next.

Eventually I hope to find a living descendant somewhere in the world.

Cheers,
Narelle.

Samuel Griffey  married Thomazin Nicholls   29/7/1816 in Northam, Devon.

Three children were born  probably in Devon.
Thomazin Nicholls Griffey   c 1817
Richard Griffey  c 1819
John Nicholls Griffey c1822

1851 census   Twist Fort   Hythe St Leonard  Kent.
Griffey Samuel  head  59   Bideford  Devon  Commissioned Boatman.
Griffey Thomasine   wife  55    Northam
Griffey  Jane  dau   22  unm    ?    West Wales
Griffey  Elizabeth  dau  unm   20   Anglessey   West Wales
Griffey  James  son  15  unm   Hythe  Kent
Griffey  Thomas  son  13  unm  Hythe  Kent
Griffey John  grandson   2   Hythe  Kent.

Please would someone look for this family in 1841 and 1861?
Also where were the three eldest children in 1851?
Perhaps there were more children.

In the 1881 Census I have found who I think is Jane married to William Maycock. living at High St, Hythe St Leonard.

Also
John H Griffey with wife and children living in Bartholomew St... he could well be the grandson  John of the 1851 census.

1881   Samuel Griffey  age 16  is living with his widowed grandmother Ann Hyam in High St.

I have no idea where he fits into the family.

Any help will be most appreciated.

What is a commissioned boatman?

Thank you,
Narelle.

Thank you Karen.

There seems to be a William who died in 1863 and another in 1868 who are possibilities.

Is there any way of telling who was at the Red Lion Inn in 1871?

Cheers,
Narelle.

Thank you Shirley.

Your help is much appreciated.

It is possible that the age on the death certificate is incorrect.  There is no age given on the marriage certificate.

Good luck with your family search,
Narelle.
