Ireland / Have initial and surname from Griffiths, now what??
« on: Wednesday 21 January 09 21:46 GMT (UK)  »
I am having trouble getting to Ireland from West Derby.  Great grandfather Michael McDonald/MacDonald/McDonnell/MacDonnell was born somewhere in Ireland, in the 1840's sometime.  He appears in the English census and on marriage and birth certificates (for children) under any of these versions.  His age is not consistent on any of them.

I believe I have his marriage certificate of 21 Aug 1876, West Derby.  He is showing as Michael McDonnell with father James McDonnell (deceased) farmer.  Michael is shown as a widower.  Census only show his birthplace as Ireland.  Family members (now deceased) always claimed he was from Ballymena.  His death certificate (Canada) says Sligo.

I have the entries for J or  James (McDonald) from Griffiths and there are so many from numerous counties, I don't know where to begin!

I am not even sure of the surname, given the variations I have found on documents.  Any help, suggestions would be appreciated.  I have been going in circles with this for years, putting it on the back burner and dragging it out again.

Thanks.

Hi Cecile,

There is a website OCFA (Ontario Cemetery Finding Aid)  http://www.islandnet.com/cgi-bin/ms2/jveinot/search
If you fill in surname with Jones, cemetery - Woodland and county - Waterloo, you will find an Isabella Jones and a William H. Jones buried there.  I don't know if they are your family, but Isabella seems likely.  Any further information on the entry could be found through the Waterloo Branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society.
http://www.waterlooogs.ca/

Appears that daughter Isabella Jones married Richard Gough.  Isabella passed away Feb 23, 1930 in Kitchener.  She is also buried in Woodland Cemetery in  Kitchener.

PM me with your email address.

Hi Cecile,

I cannot find the family on the 1911 census.  There is a James Jones married in Kitchener, Waterloo,Ontario.
James Jones, born Liverpool, abt. 1898, age 21
Parents - Thos. Jones & Isabella Lowe
Spouse - Daisy Ford, born England, abt. 1900, age 19
Parents - Robert Ford & Helen Ellaway
Marriage Date -   30 Aug 1919

I will check in Ontario and see if there is anything else on the rest of the family.  :)

Hi Phil,

We have communicated before regarding the Houstons of Frome.

Alexander John Houston, baptised 20 Aug. 1903, St. John, Frome, son to Alexander John Houston & Sarah Stokes.  Alexander married Mary White, 29 Jan 1829 at Holy Trinity, Coventry, Wiltshire.

Apparently 10 Oakfield Place, Victoria Park, Clifton, Bristol, where the family resided per the Post Office Directory of Gloucestershire is still there today.  It is about 50 yards from the BBC Bristol office on Whiteladies Road.

Still researching the Houstons and posting my finds on the Frome list.

Best wishes.

Thank you Arranroots & griz,

Yes, I am aware of the other Rootschatter and am in touch with Tony.  I think I am the one he refers to as his contact made on this site.  ;D  Or perhaps there are more?  Tony and I have exchanged information but William/Cuthbert's earlier life and his death are a mystery.  Catholic lists of priests say he died in 1914 but darned if either of us can find out where!

Great idea griz.  I have tried other Universities with art restoration included on their sites but had not thought of Manchester (need a bonk on the head)!  One of the many reasons I frequent Rootschat, great people/great ideas.

Thanks again.

Thank you everyone,

I appreciate your help.  I had wondered about his work and if I could find any references to it, but came up with nothing.  Checking with churches is an avenue I will have to pursue.

Point of interest, William Wood became Cuthbert Wood (his religious name on ordination).  He designed the cross and saint statues that are being returned to St. Francis and Gorton Monastery (Manchester) in the restoration project.  So I have been trying to find or figure out what his early art was.

Hello,

I am open to any and all suggestions.  Restoration would be a possibility, one I hadn't thought of.

The man's name is William P. Wood.  The census is RG9/2988, Folio 81, page 20.  He is living with his mother and a niece.

I have puzzled over this for some time and the occupation looks to be medieval artist, but there is a squiggle before the "e".  Maybe it is medical artist, I don't know.

In 1851 he was a draughts man and 1871 he was a priest.  Neither census gives a clue to the 1861 occupation.

Thanks again.

Occupation Interests / Medieval Artist in 1861?
« on: Saturday 28 October 06 22:49 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

On the 1861 census I have a 27 year old man that lists his occupation as Medieval Artist.

Would anyone know what this may have involved?  If you google medieval art, there isn't much for this for c. 1861 time period.

He ended up becoming a Franciscan 4 years later.

Thanks.
