Suffolk / Re: Suffolk nicknames
« on: Friday 12 February 21 14:43 GMT (UK)  »
Hello Elf
I never did find the given names of the Watsons who I listed in 2010. 'Brushy' was the nickname of both Sam Watson and his son Ernie and 'Dumblediddy' was the nickname of John (Jack) Watson. But I still don't know the given names of Bushy, Dobby, Forty and Flaky.
The S Watson on the war memorial is my grandmother's brother Sidney who died in WW1.

Hello Ann
I haven't found any new information about my Lewers since my last post. However, I think there is a distinct possibility that the Lewer families living West Sussex and those in East Sussex are related somehow but I haven't found any definitive proof yet. I have yet to visit the records office.

Wiltshire / Re: William FRICKER of Wingfield
« on: Friday 05 October 12 19:38 BST (UK)  »
Very many thanks for your news, I had not made any progress about Margaret. The marriage date fits the birth of their first child in May 1761 and I know the Fricker family had ties with Bradford on Avon.
I have got a copy of the parish register transcripts for Wingfield published by Wiltshire FHS but it only covers baptisms and burials. Is there now a published marriage register too?
I shall enjoy looking for further evidence of Margaret Helps who, I know, was born about 1740.
Thanks again

Shropshire Lookup Requests / Re: West Felton lookup please
« on: Thursday 24 May 12 11:09 BST (UK)  »
Hello Mike
Last year I visited the Shropshire records office in Shrewsbury and found the burials of Thomas Jones and his wife Ellen in the burial registers for Ruyton XI Towns. Both were buried at Pradoe Church near Weirbrook but their burial entries were in the register for Ruyton because Pradoe was in the Ruyton parish. Thomas died in 1916 and Ellen in 1928. The register stated Ellen died in Liverpool and gave the address. As a result, I was able to track a distant cousin that I hadn't heard of for very many years.

I have traced my Jones family back to the marriage of Richard Jones to Sarah Williams on 17 April 1800 in Ruyton. I do not know if they were born in Ruyton but the 1851 census for Ruyton lists a Richard Jones of about the right age, Sawyer born in St Martins, Shropshire. This could be my ancestor.
Richard is a name given subsequently in my family but I haven't detected one born in or about 1817. My other two Richards were born in 1805 and 1842.
I do know that other Jones families were living in Ruyton at this time and that sawyers were employed on the local estates at the time and for many years after. Therefore, I cannot establish any link between my and your families but I wouldn't be at all surprised if there was link somehow in the dim and distant past. No doubt our ancestors knew each other.

World War Two / WW2 Certificate of Service Query
« on: Thursday 17 May 12 22:46 BST (UK)  »
I have the Certificate of Service in the Royal Navy covering the years 1940 to 1946 of my father-in-law. The details are very sparse. It lists names of shore establishments and a couple of ships with the dates 'from' and 'to' and his yearly record of satisfactory conduct. The certificate does not include every ship he served on, doesn't state what his specialism was, the injuries he received in action or the medals and awards he received.
If I applied for his service records from the MOD would I get greater detail and, if so, what extra information may I expect? I am asking this in order to decide if it may be worthwhile ordering his records. All advice will be welcomed.

Devon Lookup Requests / Re: BROADCLYST baptism look-up 1856
« on: Tuesday 01 November 11 22:52 GMT (UK)  »
Thanks Dragongirl
The birth you found could well be the George POPE I'm looking for. The birth in the 3rd quarter of 1855 fits as does St Thomas being a sub-district of Broadclyst. The valuable info you supplied will narrow my search - hopefully to one - which will save me donating too much to the GRO.
You have been most helpful.

Thank you
You have identified relevant census details but I already know about his subsequent life. It is his birth/baptism in particular I wish to find to confirm his parentage.

Devon Lookup Requests / BROADCLYST baptism look-up 1856
« on: Monday 31 October 11 15:13 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to confirm the birth/baptism of GEORGE POPE at Broadclyst, Devon about 1856. His parents were JOHN POPE and ANN.
There was more than one birth for George POPE registered at Exeter in 1856 and any information about a Broadclyst baptism, especially the date, would help me enormously to identify the correct George Pope.

Sussex Lookup Requests / Re: Baptism at Bury 1782

Thanks again Liz
Your information proves my LEWER family stayed in BURY, Sussex for some years. This enables me to conclude that there were two LEWER families in Sussex who had a daughter named Lucy born about 1782. There is my family living at BURY, Sussex and another one at the same time living at HAMSEY/LEWES, Sussex, both sets of parents having children in the 1780s and 90s. Unfortunately, the other family historians have mixed their Lucy born at HAMSEY with my Lucy born at BURY and so they have their Lucy's marriage wrong and the subsequent family tree. I guess one got it wrong and the others have simply copied the mistake. It's easily done if you don't check original facts. I promise to check myself as soon as I can get to the records office.
Thanks again
Roger
