Europe / IRELAND: Family mystery!!
« on: Friday 24 June 05 20:01 BST (UK)  »
Why would my grandparents bring a baby with them on their journey from Dublin to Manchester circa 1900, when the child was born to married parents and the father had a reasonable income as a printer? :-\

Hi Runey
No I hadn't thought of the army but maybe the merchant navy as he lived in Plymouth. The impression I get though is that he settled in Dublin for a few years and I can't understand why. He gives his occupation on his marriage certificate as labourer so I am presuming (once again) that it would be in the docks.  Thanks for the idea though I will try and follow it through.

Has anyone got access to the 1841 census for Dawley. I am looking for Benjamin Roberts, coalminer, age about 26. He married circa 1843 Elizabeth ??? who was also born in Dawley. :) All details are from the 1851 census for the family.

No sorry. I have only just started this side of my husbands family and I am completely at a loss on where to look. I have found Susannah on the 1861 census age 15 living at Queens Cross. She is a general servant and place of birth Pensnett. On the 1871 census she is living in Kings Norton still a servant. The 1881 census she is in Manchester and married to Thomas Johnson. :-\

:(Thanks Donna but where else can I look for the Roberts family as I don't know the area. My husbands grandmother Susanna was born in Pensnett circa 1846 so I presumed (wrongly) that the family came from there.

Thanks Claudia will have a look on 1891 census. On the 1901 census she still puts birthplace as Rochdale. I have her sister's birth certificate and that is how I found her mothers maiden name. Margaret

Help! how do I find the birth date of my grandmother Martha Johnson. The 1881 census gives age 4 and birthplace Rochdale. However, there are only three or four Martha's born circa 1877 in Rochdale and the parents names don't match. I have looked at 1837online but the same names keep appearing.
