Lancashire Lookup Requests / Re: Liverpool - Winstanley

John Winstanley born c1838 Liverpool arrived 6 December 1854 via the Royal Mail Steamer 'Argo' Melbourne Vic as a single British no other family shown.  Originally recorded as Wenstanley, but Public Records Victoria have since corrected.  This ship did not carry a lot of passengers which is why it has been difficult to find him.  Married Mary Irvine Brighton Victoria 1864 and died 1 December 1894 56 years old from Phthisis (TB) at family home 25 Bayview Street, Prahran.  Death cert says buried St Kilda Cemetery, but they have no record. Some of his children buried there.  Any other info gratefully accepted as the Winstanleys have been a challenge.  I doubt his mother is Amelia, unless it is a second name, even though recorded death cert., no record found in UK or Australia.  Hope that helps.

Hi, I think the John Winstanley listed as a watchmaker on the 1847 and 1848-49 census in Geelong, Victoria is probably the father of John Winstanley born Liverpool c1838. Have not been able to find the immigration record for the family, but likely to be under NSW immigration records given it is an early record.  John Winstanley's mother is definitely Amelia on his death certificate, but like you I can find no record of her in Lancashire or Victoria.  Is possible she died on ship during voyage, but not listed on Victoria's marine index.  Further complication is that John Winstanley Jnr death certificate 1894 shows he had been in Victoria for 42 years, which would be 1852, but these dates are registered by the spouse or descendants and therefore not necessarily correct.  I am researching the Winstanley family for the 150th anniversary of Cheltenham Pioneer Cemetery in Cheltenham, Victoria.  The first born child of John Winstanley Jr and Mary Irvine, Amelia May Winstanley, was the 11th burial at the cemetery in 1865.  Would appreciate any info anyone can give me to assist with this family.

Thanks for checking Mick, it may be that he was never christened as he is definitely the son of Richard Grey who was a gardener in Waterperry.  He is shown on the 1841 census living with Richard Grey and his younger siblings in Waterperry.  Mother Elizabeth (now confirmed Wellstood) died in 1838. Richard married an elderly neighbour of his own parents, Elizabeth Wheeler, in 1842 and this seems to be when the family went off the rails.    The first daughter also does not appear to have been christened Emma (c1821) and 1841 census shows her living with Richard with her illegitimate daughter Elizabeth (born 1841) on 1841 census and presumably assisting him with her younger siblings who includes her sister Elizabeth who was baptised 1835.  Emma ends up in the Oxford workhouse 1851 census and what appears to be her daughter Elizabeth in the Headington workhouse aged 9 years.  George married in Plymouth (where 28th regiment stationed at the time) in 1849 and his marriage certificate lists his father as Richard Grey a Gardener, which he definitely was.  The 1851 census records George born 1832 Oxford, Oxfordshire still with the 28th regiment stationed at The Citadel, Salford, Manchester.  It is likely that he was either baptised at St Ebbes Oxford, Iffley or Waterperry, but perhaps not at all. Thanks for your help, will continue to battle on with unraveling this very difficult family.

Thank you so much Mick, that information will certainly help.  This family has been so hard to track down and the recording as Grey/Gray and their own habit of changing their first names has added to the difficulty.  There are some children I was unaware of, but my one last query would be whether there is also a George Grey birth registered to Richard and Elizabeth around 1832. He is shown on 1841 census living with Richard and other children aged 11, but I think he was 9.  He joined the 48th regiment and 1851 census records him in Manchester at The Citadel as George Gray born Oxford.   George died in India as George William Grey.  His marriage record records his father as Richard Grey.

Can anyone assist with any of the Grey (also shown Gray) family who lived in Waterperry Oxfordshire early 1800s.  Father Richard was born 1801-1806 the son of Richard Grey and Mary Wakelin and was a gardener (perhaps Waterperry House).  His first wife was Elizabeth who was the mother of Emma, Ann (later Angelina), George, Frederick, Jane, Elizabeth.  Emma also had an illegitimate daughter Elizabeth (1841) who ended up in the workhouse in Headington 1851 census.  Emma herself was in the workhouse in Oxford 1851 census.  Unable to find the surname of Elizabeth the 1st wife of Richard, may have been Elizabeth Welsted (Welstood).  She died 1838 and Richard married the widow Elizabeth Wheeler who was a neighbour of his parents 1842.  She was much older than him and died 1853.  1854 he married Rebecca Parker who was the widow of Thomas Reeves. George enlisted in army, Frederick well documented Oxfordshire, Ann married George Beazley and moved to Australia.  Emma and daughter Elizabeth, Jane and Elizabeth have been difficult to follow.  Any information on them or mother Elizabeth would help with a most frustrating family.  Many thanks, Sue   ???

If you are still looking for Cardingwell Grey you will find that he was christened St Mary's Church Doddington, Cambridgeshire on 27 April 1707.  Father Richard, no mother shown. Would be interesting to know how he got from Doddington to Shabbington, Bucks where he married Elisabeth Gulliver.  You will find his children were christened in Noke, Oxfordshire their records are available on line.  He dies 1776 in Noke.

I am looking for some info on George Grey/Gray in 1848 was listed as a Private in the 28th regiment, birth approx. 1832.  4 November 1849 he marries Hannah Harvey in Plymouth, Devon.  In the 1851 census he is listed as a solider of the 28th stationed at Salford barracks in Manchester shown as married.  In the same census Hannah is shown as a laundress lodging in Manchester with son George who was born 1850 to Hannah and George in Portsea.  Hannah is the daughter of John Harvey and Mary born 4 August 1829 in Plymouth Devon .   George seems to have been sent to India, probably Lucknow, Bengal as part of the 61st regiment.  George Jnr. is likely to be George William Grey who is in India and father of George Donald Grey who marries Sarah Emily Gibson on 15 April 1869 Lucknow Bengal.  Any information would be appreciated on George (1832) as to who his parents were.  Trying to prove he was not the son of Richard Grey of Waterperry Oxon.  Any info on the various Georges and Hannah would be a help.   ???  Thanks Sue

Further to previous post, now know that Judith's real name was Stanier or Stonier and she was the niece of Isaac's first wife Charlotte.  Isaac married Judith 12 August 1824 after Charlotte's death. Judith was illegitimate, christening 8 August 1802 Astbury, Mother Alice Stanier/Stonier of Moreton, father unknown.  Death 14 May 1864 Congleton.  Isaac had a large family with both wives.  Son Alfred (my GGF) and his sister Caroline (Jeffers) migrated to Victoria.  The rest stayed in Congleton.  Alfred's death record in Victoria shows mother Judith Clarke which was not correct as Judith does not appear to have remarried after Isaac's death.  The name change may have been a family error, but more likely to cover up Judith's history.  Isaac's parents appear to be Thomas Dale and Martha Johnson marriage 8 October 1782 Astbury.  Would appreciate any info on Thomas and Martha.
Thanks, Sue
