Thanks for that - so that is why i believed his name to be  Herbert Dexter.

The Birth certificate of our Mum  shows him as Herbert Dexter with his military number and that he was a Lace Worker but Gerry states

" I believe that this 1911 Census identifies the " Herbert Dexter" who is Marion Dexter's father"

George Herbert Dexter and then says that George may later have given his occupation a more masculine tweak - from Ladies Mantle Cutter to Lace Maker.

I have asked Gerry how he arrived at this but he has not replied

In just a few hours he has constructed a wonderful story  for which I am thankful but just a little unsure because one of Mum's birth names " Nelson" is missing from all the ancestors that Gerry has detailed.

I have poster my thanks and these questions to Gerry on the site but they keep vanishing

kind regards

peter

The Lighter Side / How to say THANKS
« on: Sunday 11 May 14 01:48 BST (UK)  »
my name is peter and I have pestered you for help for a long time.

Was searching for Herbert Dexter - a member of the RFC/RAF in WW1 .

All we had was a birth certificate of his daughter and his military number 79/710/78165 -

His war records were destroyed but his name and number are in files as Herbert Dexter.

I would like to let you know that one of your members has solved our problem and infact spent many hours constructing a detailed picture of Herbert Dexter.

The way Gerry did it amazed me because I have always needed detailed proof and reference numbers but that is not so as I discovered .

Gerry just read the 1911 Census and deducted that our ancestor was in fact George Herbert Dexter and he was not a Lace Worker as shown on documents but was in fact a Ladies Mantle Cutter and had simply tweaked his occupation to be more masculine .

Gerry has even pinned down where he was born and even suggests that he may have been born in the big house.

I have thanked Gerry and posted "thanks"  on the site but my messages never remain and I wonder why.

He actually went to the trouble of producing a five page report which i would be pleased to send to anyone researching Herbert Dexter . It will save you a lot of time

kind regards

peter

G'day everybody  - hope you all had a nice Easter.

I am still looking for Herbert Dexter with no further luck. Was thinking that one day someone would do a tree on the Dexter family and Herbert would feature as he was in the RFC then RAF and as a silk worker thought he may have been involved with those brave people on balloons keeping the subs under water - I watch to much television.

If you come across any more info please keep me in mind

Kind regards

just another thought why would someone put on the birth certificate of their chile " silk worker " if at the time they were in the Air Force.

Was the Silk Worker something of special interest or would a grocer in the Air force stat that he was a grocer on such a form??

Just interesting - thats all

regards again

Thanks very much for all your help.

As the child born was Marion Nelson Smith Dexter then as Smith was our Nana's maiden name then it may be that Herbert Dexter's Mothers name might be Nelson.

Nana was born in 1889 so she was 25 when Marion was born so it may be that I should be searching Births and Marriages in England around 1880 for a birth to or marriage of Nelson and Dexter.

How do you suggest that I go about that

Happy New Year

My ancestor was born at 24 Water Street. Leith in 1916 - Her Mother was Euphemia Baird and her Father was Herbert Dexter.

Herbert Dexter was a silk worker and member of the RFC and then RAF.
Cannot find any more about him as his military records were destroyed in the fires of WW11.

Have a military number but that is all.

There would have been many service personel in those years but someone may have a reference for me
