Dublin / Re: Annie Theresa Bowen born c1848
« on: Tuesday 30 May 17 13:51 BST (UK)  »
Thanks Milliepede for your interest

Her 2 children were called Ellen and John Michael, they were born about 10 years after arriving in Australia. She married Charles in 1881 and had my G Grandmother Sarah May.

Her religion is unknown, her name suggests Catholic but she married in a Protestant church.

Dublin / Annie Theresa Bowen born c1848

Hi All

I've hit a brick wall with this one and I'm hoping someone might help!

My GG Grandmother Annie Theresa Bowen was married in 1881 Australia to Charles Wallwork. She previously had 2 children from an unmarried relationship and gave her status as "widow".

All the documentation says she was born in Dublin in c1848 to parents John Bowen (farmer) and Sarah Joyce and arrived in Australia c1863.

I haven't been able to find any records on her birth, parents or immigration. We all know lots of lies were told by convicts and people leaving their lives behind in the UK so I don't know what's correct.
She was clearly educated as she signed her name very elegantly on the marriage certificate.

I'd be so grateful to anyone who can find anything regarding this family.

Many thanks, Sally

Essex / Essex Assizes Records
« on: Monday 24 February 14 00:35 GMT (UK)  »
Hello

Could anyone please advise me how to access Essex Assizes Records? I'm hoping to access online as I am in Australia. I have a SEAX subscription but haven't seen them there.

I'm trying to find out more about a Robert Gosling tried at the Essex Assizes on 5th March 1832 then sent to Australia.

I was also hoping to find a newspaper article about the crime (committed with a William Cambrell) but have not found anything yet.

Many thanks for reading this post.

Somerset Lookup Requests / Hewlett Family St Mary's Taunton
« on: Sunday 07 July 13 06:53 BST (UK)  »
Hi All

Hoping someone has access to burial records for St Mary Magdalene, Taunton before 1813. There are some fantastic resources online for this parish but unfortunately not before 1813.

Looking for burial of Sarah HEWLETT (nee Willcocks) wife of George Hewlett, Coachmaker. Died between 1785 (last child) and 1811 (George made will, no mention of wife, made codicil in 1815, died 1816)

Also burials of their children (dates from family wills)

George b 1765 - died between 1811 - 1815
Charles b 1766 - died between 1798 - 1811
Pender b 1768 - died before 1798
Martha b 1773 - died between 1798 - 1811
Sarah b 1779 - died before 1798
Rachel b 1785 - died before 1798

Many thanks for your interest in this, much appreciated.

Thank you lovely Rootschatters!

Janine, that excellent link to the Tasmanian Archives is full of goodies, as you suggested a little tricky to use but perseverance does pay off - very grateful for your post.

Yorkslass, what a great find that newspaper report was, so much more information to work with!

Thank you both again, you gave me even more than I was hoping for.

Norfolk Lookup Requests / Norwich Assizes records
« on: Wednesday 15 May 13 02:32 BST (UK)  »
Hello

My ancestor Eliza Ward was tried at the Norwich Assizes on 22/7/1846 charged with arson and sentenced to 15 years. She was transported to Tasmania, Australia aboard "Asia". In Australia she gave her parents as Willard Ward, Master Mariner and Mary Neill and that she was born in Essex. Cannot find a trace of them however many lies were told by convicts about their family background.

Can anyone please advise me how to access the assizes records from Australia? Are they online somewhere or which place should I contact to have copies made?

She was from Essex and I'm wondering why she was in Norfolk or was she just tried in Norfolk.

Many thanks, Sally
