The 1911 census entry for George Brown & Sarah Ellen shows two children, Edith Annie b. 1904 & John Edward b. 1906.

Both children were registered as Brown, with mother's maiden name as Jacobs.

Presumably Eli & Sarah Ellen had separated before 1904.

Anyone else get an email from 23andMe full of legal jargon? It went to spam and might have been a scam but it did not look like the usual scam material.

Yes, I had one of these too, also went to my spam folder. I thought it looked like it might be legitimate.

Not just you! I've encountered the same problem in the last couple of days. Hopefully Ancestry will sort out the glitch soon.

The Common Room / Step-children on the 1921 census
« on: Thursday 13 February 25 18:57 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, I was just curious about the official guidance on the 1921 census for step-children.

I am looking at a record with a step-daughter, and it states "both alive" under the Orphanhood column. Her mother had re-married, I think after her husband had died.

Was "both alive" intended to encompass step-parents?

Also the possibility that someone in Barbara's tree may have been adopted?

Many thanks for all your replies!

I've been trying your suggestions, and have found the best results from viewing full screen, zooming in, then snipping in sections. I did try downloading the full page in pdf, then cropping in an online pdf editor, but actually the results weren't as good.

I find it extraordinary that there isn't a simpler way on their website to do the one thing that most users will want to do!

Have you considered this baptism:

William Rouse, 13 Feb 1791, Gravesend St George, parents William & Sarah. (Previous entry looks like a brother, Robert.)

It might be worth having a look for any other family members in the brickmaking industry. I have a family line full of brickmakers, they also seem to migrate between brickfields, I have them in various locations including north-west Kent, south-east London, all the way to Ware in Hertfordshire.
