Sligo / Re: Martin surname in Sligo
« on: Wednesday 17 October 12 14:57 BST (UK)  »
My family only appear in the records in Dublin after 1852
No sign of Charlotte until her marriage in 1864.
No sign of a marriage for the parents or her birth.
There is a John Joseph 1852 and a Thomas in the Dublin records that could fit but no way to confirm this.
I had given up hope until I came across the UK 1871 census for a John Martin born Sligo a tailor.
I have my John marrying in Liverpool in 1875.
He too was a tailor so I am running with the chance that the family move to Dublin from Sligo and settled in Grattan Ct.
Then he moved to Liverpool sometime before 1875.
I can recall a possible record for a marriage in Elphin in 1826 for a John Martin to a Margaret Healy .
I can also recall visiting when I was a child  family" friends" in Galway city in the 1960 who were Healy.
Now I am wondering if there is a family connection here too.
Don't have a copy of the ref as I think I dismissed it at the time.
I know its a wild card but I have just had another brick wall of 4 years SMASHED with the help of the forum family.
Thanks

Sligo / Martin surname in Sligo
« on: Wednesday 17 October 12 12:10 BST (UK)  »
I have found John Martin born around 1850 in the Uk census working in Liverpool . He puts his place of birth as Sligo.
I have been searching for my John who's parents were John and Margaret in Dublin records.
He had a sister Charlotte who was born about 1843.
I can find no marriage for his parents or baptismal cert for Charlotte in Dublin, which has me looking outside of this area.
The John I am searching for was a tailor as is this one. I may be a long way off the mark but I am at a brick wall in Dublin. The records on IFHF do not have  a Charlotte or John born with parents John or Margaret.
Any suggestions  Are all the records on line for Sligo through IFHF ?
much appreciate any help you can offer

Thank you for your help I have email the museum in glasnevin as suggested and they are being very helpful. So a big thank you to all. PS looking at the map you are spot on with where the grave should be. My luck , the area was being used as the main gathering area for the dead branches and grass so I couldn't see it there was a headstone back in 2009. maybe next time I get back the will have cleared the area and I can check.

The search engine on the Glasnevin website is very inflexible, allowing only a search by name (though you can use initials) and time period - no searches by surname only or across all years and definitely not by grave number.  I inquired a good while ago about the original purchaser of a specific grave.  I was told that the records could be dug out but that it would cost €50 (if I remember correctly).  I'm a little surprised, therefore, that you have not received a reply.  Have you phoned Glasnevin (tho' if your monniker is a clue to your location, that could be expensive) ?

I have tried but I was told the inquiry had been pass on for action but again heard nothing . I wrote again and told them I had written a number of times but have heard nothing back. I have tried to search for the year but the name of my GGGF was John Hayes. he bought the grave but I am not sure if he is buried there or if so when he died. You would think that being the holder of the original papers and also a gggd I would have some entitlement to be able to obtain this information from the grave number.I visited both GB & GN in 2009. Found the woman in the office very unhelpful. She suggested I get on the net even though I told her I had travelled from Australia to visit the grave and just wanted to know who was buried in that grave.because I could not get the imformatuion from the records as they didn't work on grave numbers.
The caretaker at GB was great but the spot where the grave is just happened to be where all the rubbish was piled up and I could not see if there was any headstone. I am hoping to make another trip back to Ireland maybe next year

can anyone tell me how I can get information as to who is buried in Grave W33 at Goldenbridge.
I have the original grave papers and have written to Glasnevin but they do not reply. I have tried and paid on their site but I can't get anywhere. just not sure of who is buried there but the grave was purchased by my GGGF in 1877.  It could be his parent or his wife but I have had no luck.  Is it possible to search by grave number ?

Hi Eamon
Yes that would have been my Dad Kevin Martin. Sadly he died in Sydney of a massive heart attack. He was indeed related to that famous Eamon Martin. Eamon was a younger brother of John my grandfather.  When did your family leave Roscommon?

Dublin / Re: Doyle + Kavanagh

Thank you both for the information. I am still unsure if I Ann Behan  is the mother of my Mary Doyle. The other Doyles were at St Andrews and the Kavanagh's lived in this parish . The family story is that the GGM was from the north side which fits with St Lawrence Parish but ?
There were also 2 sets of Michael & Mary Kavanagh living in the Clarence st area in the 1901 census.  I believe the couple born in Arklow were Michael's parents.
The Doyles were living at Queens Sq too in the Parish of St Andrews in 1901. The wife is dead, as it list Thomas as a widower and the girls Francis and Anna are single. Mary & Michael her husband with my gf baby Michael are living there too.
I will have to get a copy of the marriage cert and see if it gives anymore details about the parents. I just have a feeling that the 1898 marriage listed in Irish genealogy.ie is not the correct one. I will alos try and get copies of Birthcerts as you suggested. Again Thanks for the help.

I have Michael Kavanagh married Mary Doyle about 1898 . I found a record and it gives the parents as Thomas Doyle +Ann Behan. . In the 1901 census I found the family living in Queens Sq. Thomas is there  but his wife is dead. Now I searched for the daughters Ann &Francis but I have found possible 2 Mothers, Bridget Kenna or Ann Behan . how can I work out if Ann Behan is mother of my Mary Doyle
