Hi Simon, thanks for the link to info on the New Plymouth Purnells, from whom my husband is directly descended. Saved me a lot of time mapping out the tree!

Hi there, my husband is descended from Charles Purnell and Sarah Ann Clegg who came to NZ in the 1850s. I've only just begun researching this side of the family and have some info on NZ descendants.

Hi Merideth,
Thanks for that. The Battle of Culloden sounds a likely cause for their shift. Do you have any information on the parents of James Hepburn snr, circa 1775, married to Ann McMillan/McMullan?

I'm wondering of there are any Hepburn relatives still in Scotland - or did they all end up in the colonies after the 1830-50s?

I had thought William, son of James snr stayed, but apparently he emigrated too.

Cheers, Maggie

William did have a daughter Margaret, but she was born in 1839. Good luck in your search!

Is there anyone with interests in the Hepburn family from Corpach, Kilmallie, Argyllshire?

James Hepburn was born around 1775 and married Anne McMullen around 1798. Haven't been able to pinpoint their marriage, or deaths, presumably in the same area.

Their children were: James b. 1799, d. 1876, Alexander b. 1803, William b. 1806, Margaret b. 1810, Duncan b. 1811.
There may have been others - Christian, Mary.

Alexander and Duncan went to NZ in 1839, Margaret to Australia. William married Flora and was living in the area at the time of the 1841  census.

The family was originally from Dunbar in East Lothian, not sure when they went west.

Regards,
Maggie, NZ

Hi, I'm new to this message board! Any members interested in the Hepburn family I would love to share info. I'm descended from Alexander H who came to NZ in 1840 on board the Westminster with his brother Duncan and their wives, Catherine (McDonald) and Isabella (Braithwaite) Their father was James, mother Ann/Agnes McMullan/McMillan. They left Scotland 1839 and arrived here via Sydney.
