Result!! Recieved the marriage certificate today from Ards Borough Council and I have the right Robert Minnis and Margaret Reid (and now also their fathers names and occupations too!)

Many thanks to all for the help and a special thank you to David from Emerald Ancestors for his kind offer to search their unvalidated records for me.

Now to find William Adair and his wife......................

Many thanks Kezcol, I have PM'ed you the contact details for Terry Kelly at the South Tyne Star, I'm sure he will look forward to any information that you may have to share about William and his heroics.

The Common Room / Re: Any ideas why this couple did not marry???

My GG Grandparents on my mothers side started having children in 1885 and didn't marry until 1914, all the children apart for the first one having the fathers surname. I thought they had married due to the outbreak of war, but it turns out that she was terminally ill and died only a few months later  :'(

World War One / William BIGLEY - WWI - Local newspaper appeal
« on: Thursday 03 September 09 12:49 BST (UK)  »
This story appeared in my local newspaper the other day, appealing for information about a WW1 local hero William Bigley and I immediately thought that someone on here will probably have the answers they need.

Anyone with more information about William Bigley should contact Terry Kelly, the Jarrow and Hebburn reporter for the South Tyne Star. I can provide a phone number or email address via PM if required.

Thanks for all the help so far. I have had a breakthrough thanks to David from Emerald Ancestors who very kindly searched the unvalidated records last night and has hopefully found enough details to enable me to order a marriage certificate for Robert and Margaret (fingers crossed). Incidentally these details do not match the ones found on the pilot site.

Just need to find James Adairs parents now  ;)

Thanks for that, but surely they must be a different Robert Minnis and Margaret Reid (massive coincidence I know)? They were living in West Rainton, County Durham in 1881 with at least 7 children, oldest 31 and youngest 12! Would they have travelled all the way back to Ireland to wed in their fifties I wonder?

Down / James Adair / Jane Minnis Co Down
« on: Wednesday 26 August 09 08:08 BST (UK)  »
Hi all. I'm currently at a loss on how to find any more information on my gg grandparents and would appreciate any input or advice. I've searched for them on the IGI pilot site, Ancestry and also Ros Davies site to no avail.

James Adair, born c1845 in Newtonards (although sometimes states Comber on the census?) Father was William Adair (labourer). Married Jane Minnis in 1865 (West Rainton, Co Durham). Jane was born c1850 in Comber, her parents were Robert Minnis (miner) and Margaret Reid.

Regards,
Rob

The Lighter Side / Re: How cross would you be, or am I over reacting?

I'm quite lucky in the fact that I found this site before I had given anyone access to my rather meagre tree (been at this for 3 months and only have 180 genuine names so far) but I would have shared these without hesitation believing everyone to be as honest as I would be with their tree.

I've had really nice, genuine people and we have shared knowledge each way, but then again I have had the "can I have access to your tree" messages without anything to verify that we actually share common ancestors. The last message I got was actually the wrong person totally and when I replied to tell them, I got a message back saying "but can I still have access to your tree?"

The mind boggles  :o

Here's another urbex website:

Fascinating pictures and sites, but I wouldn't have the nerve (bottle) to get myself into them!!
