Norfolk / Re: Interpreting 1939 Register Information
« on: Thursday 17 November 16 19:05 GMT (UK)  »
Many thanks. My local library has recently taken out a subscription to Find My Past, so this was my first look at the 1939 Register. I will see if it allows access to the original documents.

Norfolk / Interpreting 1939 Register Information
« on: Thursday 17 November 16 17:06 GMT (UK)  »
My Great Uncle, Robert Reginald Bushell, born Wisbech 1889, won the Military Medal in WW1, and I had been unable to trace his whereabouts after the war. I have now found him in the 1939 Register, but do not understand the information:
He is single. His occupation is Am Warden. The address is No 34 UTTAIN MARRIED INTRO MARHAM. I have failed to work out what this means, and would welcome any advice on interpreting it.
Many thanks

Derbyshire / Re: Missing wife of William Cooke, Chesterfield
« on: Thursday 30 May 13 21:55 BST (UK)  »
Thank-you for all these replies; I have just got back from a day out, and am trying to take in the wealth of information. William Cook(e)'s parents were Thomas and Elizabeth, and he was a coal miner. In 1851 he was living at Newbold Moor; in 1861, Alsop's Place, Newbold; in 1871, 7 Alsop's Houses; and 1881, 7 Alsop's Row. He probably died 1882. His status is given as married throughout, and he did not marry Rebecca Thorley, with whom he had a daughter in 1871, as she married another miner in 1875. The Caroline Bostock/Cook/Spotswood you have traced  looks a strong candidate for the missing wife. I had guessed that the missing wife was in an institution, as William continues to describe himself as married; if Caroline did marry John Spotswood, it must have been bigamous, though perhaps William did not know about this. I clearly need to have a good look at the censuses and then order some certificates. I keep writing up chunks of family history, but it appears that this branch of the family needs a novelist rather than an amateur historian!
Anyway, many thanks for your help. If you have the interest/energy to come up with any more information, please do; and if you can use your experience to come up with better interpretations than mine, then again I would love to hear them.
Repeated thanks

Derbyshire / Missing wife of William Cooke, Chesterfield

I was recently given very good leads on this forum, and would like to ask for further help. William Cooke (Bapt Whittington 1822) appears in the censuses 1851-1881 as married, but no wife is present. There is a possible marriage (William Cooke/Hannah Mettam, Whittington, 1847), but I failed today on Ancestry to find a possible Hannah Cook(e) in the censuses; there was at least one of that name, but she was with her husband. The Ancestry site crashed several times (accessed via public library), and I may have missed some possibilities. In 1871 William was living with Rebecca Thorley in Newbold, and they had a daughter who is the ancestor I am investigating (Rebecca led a complicated life). If anyone can find the missing wife (who may not have been called Hannah), I would be delighted; or alternatively, does anyone have suggestions as to where she could have been for over 30 years?
Many thanks

Many thanks for these speedy responses. I tried lots of variants (Thornley, etc.), but never came up with this one. I will get to work on this lead.
Thanks again

Derbyshire / Timothy Thorley/Ann Gregory, married 1830, Scarcliffe
« on: Saturday 18 May 13 21:55 BST (UK)  »
I am having problems with this branch of the family, who seem to have led complicated lives, and are difficult to trace in census/BMD records. Rebecca THORLEY was born around 1841, Palterton, and I have first found her in the 1861 census, as a servant in the home of John Jarvis. In 1866 she married James Chilton, and her father's name is given as Timothy. I have now found on FamilySearch a marriage between Timothy Thorley and Ann Gregory, in Scarcliffe, 24 Nov 1830. They appear to have had several children (Ellen, bapt 1831, Scarcliffe; William born around 1840, Palterton, and probably others born in Palterton). But I cannot find any trace of Timothy and Ann Thorley in any census, or any record of their deaths. I have found Rebecca and William from 1861 onwards, but not before. I would be very grateful for any help in tracing this family.
Many thanks

Many thanks, Chris. From a glance at Google Earth it looks as if the old buildings are long gone.
Thanks again

Kent / Charles Street, Woolwich
« on: Thursday 07 February 13 20:49 GMT (UK)  »
I have several ancestors recorded on Charles Street, Woolwich (Borough Greenwich) between 1851 and 1891. The church they married in etc. was St Mary Magdalene. A search on Google Earth brings up a Charles Street north of the river, in North Woolwich; can anyone enlighten me as to whether there was a Charles Street south of the river in the nineteenth century?
Many thanks
