Norfolk / Re: Which newspaper covers Shipdham/Swanton Morley
« on: Monday 01 June 09 14:15 BST (UK)  »
Hi Sussexgirl,

Swanton Morely would have been covered by "The Dereham Times". Shipdham I'm less sure of, possibly also The Dereham Times, if not the "The Watton and Swaffham Times".

Both of these publications, together with nearly all regional papers in Norfolk now come under ownership of:

Archant Regional Ltd
Prospect House
Rouen Road
Norwich
NR1 1RE

Technical Help / Re: AVG Free 8.5 download; help please.

Nanny Jan,

Started the "manager", got to 60% (after a pause and resume) and then the computer just shut down..........

I'm wondering if the switching off is a problem with the power saving feature (of windows) rather than a download issue.

It's a long time since I've played with windows - the following is from memory and may not be exactly correct... I'm sure a windows user will correct me.

To temporarily turn of power saving:

Start - Settings - Control Panel - Power Options (or Saving?)

Make a note of the current settings - change the following to 'Never'. Obviously if this is how they are set at the moment then this is probably not the cause.

Turn off hard disks
System standby
System hibernate

OK to save the settings.

Then try the download again. If it makes no difference and you did change any settings don't forget to put them back as they were.

Regards, Paul.

Nanny Jan,

Sorry you're still having problems.  I've not heard of the AVG download manager causing a computer to switch off, very strange.

The actual AVG install file is around 62Mb in size, if you are using a 56k dial-up connection, then at maximum throughput it would take around 3.2 hours to download. So you would certainly need some method of resuming the download from your 2 hour cut off point.

The idea  of AVG from a magazine cover disk is quite good if you are able to find one.

If you have no success, if you wish to, send me a private message with your postal address. I'll download the current version and send it to you on CD.

Regards, Paul.

Hi,

Assuming you are using MS windows...

AVG have a download manager that will allow you to resume an interrupted download. Details of how it works are here: http://www.avg.com/faq.num-1612

Download manager here: http://www.avg.com/filedir/inst/avg_free_stb_en_8_22.exe

Alternatively, you could ask someone with a broadband connection to download AVG for you and put it onto a CD so you can install from there.

Technical Help / Re: Questions about Firefox
« on: Wednesday 20 May 09 19:18 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

1). The alt attribute is meant to be used as an alternative text if the image is not available, it is not intended to be used as mouse-over text. To show a mouse-over text on images or image-maps, use the title attribute, like this:

<img src="myimage.gif" alt="A description of myimage" title="Text used for mouse-over" />

2). Displays OK here - using Firefox 3.0.10 (rv:1.9.0.10 Gecko/2009042513) running under Linux.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Re: Occupation - help required
« on: Wednesday 06 May 09 12:16 BST (UK)  »
Hi

Thank you both very much!

I had initially read it as 'something' office hand, with the first word probably ending "ory" - unable to then make a sensible first word I convinced myself that it wasn't...

I have just spent a few more minutes looking over the whole page and will go along with "Printing Office Hand".

Hi,

Painter above, butcher below - but what is the occupation (of a 14 yr old female) in the centre?

I'm unable to make sense of it :-[

Technical Help / Re: Digital Camera

Hi erin21,

Google for "lcd shade"

Something like this, http://www.morrisphoto.co.uk/ProductDetails~productID~5578~categoryid~222.html for example.

In true Blue Peter style you can manufacture a temporary one out of matt black card and attach it to the camera with double sided sticky tape... might not look very elegant but works quite well.

Hi Pam,

Thank you so much for that.

It certainly does help.... and has introduced a sibling that I was not aware of, Eleanor. (Edit: after my second mug of coffee I've just realised that Eleanor is highly likely to be 'Ellen', and not an unknown sibling. :-[ )

Can I assume there was no indication of Sarah Ann's father.

Regards, Paul
