Lancashire / Re: One Child, Two Baptisms?
« on: Friday 02 June 17 12:28 BST (UK)  »
My great grandfather was one of twins One died at 17hours and they were both baptized on same day of birth.  The other was baptized again a couple of months later. People believed then that the babies would not go to heaven if not baptized.  Perhaps the 2nd was thanks for the life or maybe the family wanted a ceremony where other members of the family could attend.

Scholes runs into Whelley and Whelley into Aspull so it seems the family moved about the same area.  At that time most baptisms took place at All Saints which is the parish church of Wigan.

You will find no headstones at Wigan Parish Church but the Museum of Wigan Life at the bottom of Library St in the centre of Wigan has all the family history information you would want.  Phone 01942 828128 for information including opening times. Good Luck!

Hope I am in time.  All registers of churches are in Museum of Wigan Life at the bottom of Library St which is in the centre of Wigan as is Wigan Parish Church.  You need to book a time to use the machines in order to see most of the registers but some books are also held.  All details are on Wigan world web site.  Ince Cemetery is on the main road out of Wigan A577 towards Warrington. Good Luck!

It is interesting that you remember an Eddie Weigh at Paradise Farm.  It looks as though descendants of Jane Yates lived there for a very long time and even the name Edward is passed down.  The 1960s don't seem long ago to me.

Thanks to you all for the information.  I had almost given up on the Yates as I kept going into a dead end.    Sarah Yates was my greatx2 grandmother and I thought she must be related to Jane as my great grandmother had her baby at the home of Jane and Edward Weigh.  I shall have a good look at the site you give Allan. Sarah was married in Childwall.

HI Shirlsanne
I have put a posting on the Yates forum asking about your family tree.  It sounds as though you are descended from Edward and Jane.  Is this so?I sent for the marriage cert to find out the name of Jane's father then I could hopefully find out if Jane and my great x2 grandmother Sarah were sisters.  I know most of the descendants of Sarah and James Phythian but was getting nowhere with the Yates.  This forum has helped a lot. I should be glad of any information you have on the Yates.

Hi Ivor and Shirlsanne

Thankyou very much for the information which I was really pleased to have.  Sarah Phythian nee Yates had a son Joseph, probably named after her father.  Where do they come on your tree Shirlsanne?  Sarah nee Yates and James Phythian were living in Woolton in 1841 and their daughter Sarah was born there.  They moved to St Helens before 1851.
