Hello Priscilla,
Yes, you will find that any search engine only skims the top of websites (meta tags or those pages that are indexed) I have also tried some deep web search engines, and searched ancestry, british newspapers online etc.

What I am actually looking for is historical pictures or stories that people may have in their own collections/memories, as to date still only approximately 10% of library content is online on the web.

Yes I have spent quite some time on genuki (as I am also a contributor to digitising parish records - largely the tithe records), but many thanks for your reply, and good luck with your research.
Kindst Regards
Steve

Hi Guys
Watts Yard rings bells for some reason. I researched one of my family lines (Crappers of St Giles and Summertown) a number of years ago, and spent weeks in the Oxford archives/local history library.
I'll dig out my notes and have a search. There was always mention of Crappers Yard (underneath Keble college), I'll look up Watts Yard.

Hi Robin
I think its "White Horse Arms" rather than "Whitehouse farm"
He was the Innkeeper there, in Mitcheldean.
Giles is my GGGG Grandfather (as discovered yesterday!),
hope this helps!

It certainly is!
I have examined most of the records over the past 15 years, and there is one logical conclusion. The nearby gentry Lord Norris (and earlier Norreys), had a tradition of using the names Francis and Henry, it could be our man is an illegit off shoot. Something my grandmother also mentioned years ago, is that she recalled family at a large country house nearby, I think this was Weston manor. The seat of the Norris family. It is equally possible that Francis adopted teh surname of his landlord ofcourse.

Hello Borri! Looks like we have both been searching for the same man. I have been looking for probables since the early 1990s, and no success yet.
Hearth tax I have tried, they wont help, although, over the many years, there is one interesting connection, which I will go into later. The original marriage record is in the Oxford Archives, and shows both Francis and Ann (nee Stuart) signing (with an X), in 1787, and as you say prior to that the trail goes very cold.
