Cumberland Lookup Requests / 1851 Census - STANLEY
« on: Saturday 04 December 04 09:34 GMT (UK)  »
My great grandfather John Stanley was living in Newbiggin, Ravenstonedale, Cumberland at the time of the 1881 census. He was married to Ann, who's maiden name i do not know. I cannot find a record of his birth in 1844 either at 1837online or on the FamilySearch websites. I want to trace his parents and eventually get back as far as i can on the Stanley tree.

Any information to assist me in this search would be great.

NB I have found out that my Great Grandmother's maiden name was DENT.

Thanks,

Of course! -  The great thing about going back in time is that you enter into a whole new world - Eva Stanley at thirteen was a bobbin winder!

Thanks for all your help - I have registered with www.ancestory.co.uk

If I do find a link between my family and helen Morton, I'll let you know.

I had not seen Mary Ellen Morton until you gave me the information. I have not accessed the 1891 census - (incidentally where did you access this?)

I was born and went to school ih Huddersfield living there for most of my life -I know Ravensthorpe well.

My grandfather was Thomas (later calling himself Tom) who is not listed in the 1891 census would have been 21 at the time. He married in 1894, but was obviously not living with his parents for at least three years prior to that

With regard to Helen Morton and a possible relation - you could be right - she is not listed in the household on the1901 census.

Nicky,

Many thanks for all of this.

I have tracked back to John and Ann through my Grandfatehr and Grandmother and have details of all their respective children which exactly match those kindly provided by yourself - so thanks for this.

The information you have provided is most useful and I will keep in touch with this site if I need help - Once again, many thanks and I appreciate you giving up your time to help.

I have only just started researching my family tree and as yet have not got any copies of birth or marriage cerificates. All the information I have got is from the internet ((1901 and 1881 censuses) To be honest I do not know what you mean by gro index (which explains how new I am to this).

I have located my great-grandfather and great-grandmother who are:

John Stanley b1844 in Keswick, and living in the Village of Newbiggin. Married to Anne Stanley at the time of the 1881 census.

I would like to find out who John's father was, but I do not know his Father's forename. I would also like to discover Ann's maiden name.

Their first child, James was born in 1866 in Cockermouth and they moved to West Yorkshire somewhere between 1885 and 1888. There was a marriage of a John Stanley in Cockermouth between July and september 1863 but I have not got concrete evidence that this was the same John.
