I'm after a bit of help reading a marriage transcript.  Its the one on the bottom left - between William Smirthwaite and Mary Veevers.  What I'd like to know are the names of the signatures of the two people who signed as being in the presence of the marriage.

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HY-65D1-PY

I'm hoping they might be family of the Smirthwaites (or Veevers).

Dr John Shortt - surgeon general - died in 1889 aged 77. So possibly an uncle or cousin of JFS

JFS's uncle John died aged 16.  His only Shortt uncle was a Jonathon Shortt who died 20/6/1855.

So cousin seems more likely.

Did he have a brother William Henry Shortt? Also an Indigo planter. Married Ruth Christian in Bhaugulpore in 1883.

Just found that John Farquharson SHORTT,  married Edith CHRISTIAN, (b. 28/3/1858, Monghyr, Bengal, INDIA d. 18/2/1937, Monghyr, Bengal, INDIA) on 31/5/1882  Monghyr, Bengal, INDIA

Looks like a case of 2 brothers marrying 2 sisters  ;)

Opps........jumped the gun there.  Ruth's father was Henry Christian whilst Edith's father was Alexander Christian

A Dr John Shortt was writing about the culture and manufacture of indigo in India in the early 1860's. There must surely be a family connection.

The only John Shortt I have is John Farquharson SHORTT.  It is possible that Dr John Shortt could be the son of one of JFShortt's brothers.

What I have so far

John Farquharson SHORTT, b. 30/1/1854, Inverness, SCOTLAND d. 3/8/1915, Darjeeling, Bengal, INDIA (Age 61 years) (also listed as John Fox Shortt in his daughter's marriage record).

-m- 31/5/1882  Monghyr, Bengal, INDIA

Edith CHRISTIAN, b. 28/3/1858, Monghyr, Bengal, INDIA d. 18/2/1937, Monghyr, Bengal, INDIA (Age 78 years)

3 Children
1. Frances Beatrice SHORTT, b. 1/3/1883, Muzaffarpur, Bengal, INDIA
2. Mabel Grace SHORTT,  b. 20/11/1884, Monghyr, Bengal, INDIA
3. Elsie Lilian SHORTT, b. 25/10/1894, Bengal, INDIA

Mabel went on to marry Lt. Col. Mark Gordon ANDERSON in Bombay 4/1/1915.

What I'm interested in is finding out what John Farquharson SHORTT was doing in India, and when did he move to India from Scotland.

Any thoughts as to where I might find this out?
