Berwickshire / Re: irregular marriages at Lamberton toll
« on: Friday 27 March 09 19:05 GMT (UK)  »
William YEOMAN & Esther m. around 1775 - I'd really appreciate it if anyone spots them!

I've drawn a blank with these North Durham ancestors and am supposing an irregular marriage across the border as they were non-conformists and in East Ord for their first child in Aug 1776 and Middle Ord for the second in 1778.  So, I'm guessing the marriage took place 1775.

William was born around 1747 and Esther 1754, from their ages at death.  I believe that Esther was a BROWN; their son James corresponded with a "cousin", James BROWN.

There is a baptism recorded in Tweedmouth PR of Esther BROWN, dau. of John, of Tweedmouth 22 Nov 1754.   There is a John BROWN, "farmer in Letham, Berwickshire" that also fits.

Hi Laurina,

Thanks for looking; that family is the one I call "The Fold", as that seems to be the name of their farm, but they're not my lot.  There is more than one FORREST family grouping in Chirton/North Shields/Howden Pans and I've not found any connection between them all as yet.

Ecneps - thanks for the links.  I've trawled a number of the PR's and BT's but not yet found my man.

Northumberland / John Stoker FORREST
« on: Saturday 14 March 09 10:46 GMT (UK)  »
Just a plea to anyone scanning PR's, particularly non-conformist, around 1796-1800 in the broad area of North Shields to keep an eye out for my John Stoker FORREST.

He consistently states in censuses, 1851-1871, that he was born in North Shields, was married in Christ Church, 29 Jan 1825, and his first son, John Scott, was Christened there 9 Aug 1826.  He died 18 May 1872 and calculating back he was probably born in 1797.  The family has a history of non-conformism, with that son being a well known Methodist lay preacher in the town.  His family are not around 1830-1841, when he is probably doing military service; I can't find his second son's Christening, Tom b. about 1830, nor any of them in the 1841 census.  His widow is described as "Muster Roll Annuitant" in 1881.  Otherwise, he seems to be a seaman or scullerman.  Given the consistent family naming conventions, his mother was probably a STOKER, so a FORREST-STOKER marriage prior to 1797 would be a bonus!

Wiltshire / Re: Do you have a link with Braydon Oak - Savernake Forest, Wiltshire?

I, too, have just spotted this.

"Jim" (Klaas Ysbrand) TWISK lived there with his wife, Charlene, and their children Kate, Lucy and James, from about 1970.  He would have been about 40 then, at some time was working selling fork lift trucks and died in 1999.  Jim came from London but his parents were Dutch; his father owned a florists in The Strand - Jacques Fleur.  Charlene was from Pewsey, where her family has a farm; her brother was farming at that time.  I would guess that the children would still have local connections; I would start in Pewsey.

I knew Jim, Charlene, Kate & Lucy when they lived in Kew in the 1960's.
