Suffolk / Re: MACRO Family
« on: Thursday 30 May 19 07:32 BST (UK)  »
I have managed to trace back to Adam Macro, Risby Suffolk. I have a copy of his 1565 will from Suffolk Records Office. They lived within a few miles of Risby for the next 300 years.
I was not able to establish a link between the Glemsford Macro families and my one. I suspect mine came from Soham in Cambridgeshire, but no data.
Mine are not related to the Bury St Edmunds family, which had some prominent people of the time.
If you haven't used them, the Records Office are very good.
Best of luck!

Hi Geoff,
Thanks for looking up the IGI. I already knew about them and discounted them because of some info I hadn't mentioned:

We have traced the Macro family line back to Arthur Macrowe:

The five children of William Macrowe and Anne  Chinnerye.
Adam             Bapt             03 Sept    1582                   Risby
Anne               "                 21 Feb    1583                  Risby
William            "                 Abt        1586                   Risby
Arthur              "                 12 Mar    1590                  Risby
Margaret         "                   21 Apr    1594                  Risby

1. "Risby" by A F Webling page 143 describes the salvaging of registers in 1563 by three men
including Adam  Macrowe churchwarden.

2. Suffolk Green Book No. X "Suffolk in 1524, a Subsidy Return" reports
Lawrans Makerow page 343, and
Lawrence Makerolle page 432.

William's first born son is named Adam, so it is possible that William's father was the Adam mentioned as churchwarden.

I also know that there were earlier Macro's in Soham, Cambridgeshire and in Norfolk so are am trying to see if there are any links.

Jon

Hello.
I have just found out that the Norfolk Family History Society has a family tree for Macrow in Tottington / Hockham.
I have traced my Macro line in Suffolk back to 1580 in Risby and am trying to go further.
Would anyone know if this Macrow family tree pre-dates 1580?
Thanks.

Ruth,

Thank you.

There were some Macroe's in Snailwell in 1667:

"Index to transcripts of Snailwell Parish Regsiters (1570-1992)
Baptisms
1667 Jul 21 Macroe (BT Macro] Willm son of Robt & Anne"

So they must have moved there after 1664. Or maybe Snailwell wasn't in Cambridgeshire at that time?

I know there were some Macro's in Soham in the early 1500's and I would like to see where they had spread out.
Could somebody please lookup in the Hearth Tax records for the spelling variations:
Macroe, Macrow, Macrowe, Mackerowe, Makrowe, Makerow, Makro.
Thanks!

Hi Alan,

Thanks anyway. I suppose we need to focus on Risby but there isn't very much.

William had 5 children in Risby 1582 - 1594. The first son was named Adam, second William, so
I am guessing that William's father was Adam. There was an Adam who was a churchwarden in Risby in
1564 so he may be the one.

Any ideas?

Thanks and regards,

Jon

PS Sometimes it is useful to have a rare name.

Hi Alan,

I am looking for any Macro's prior to 1600.

The 1524 Subsidy Return reports:

Saxham Parva                                John Makerow laborer

Hornyngeserth Magna [Horringer]   John Makerow laborer

I am trying to fill in a gap between William Macrowe, father of Arthur Macrowe;
Arthur born Risby in 1590.

Thanks,

Jon

Does anyone have a copy or a reference to an online copy of:

Volume IV Horringer Registers 1558-1850

Volume V Little Saxham Registers 1559-1850?

I have found references to Macro's in these villages in the 1500's.
Also spelled Macrowe, Makerowe.

Thanks.

Hi.

Could you please see if there any Macro, Macrow, Macrowe or Makro entries in the Soham registers
before 1700?

Thabks,

Jon
