Two records appear for Hubert D R Parr:

March 1904, appointment minute 14769, to R Pman (Rural postman) Leatherhead to W Horley

November 1906: minute E26729, to T Pman (temporary??), Walton on Thames

Hope that is of interest

I can see just the one other entry:

July 1912: nomination 182348, Chas W Drury, Unest Skd Workman, Engr Dept, minute E39020/13

(Unest - unestablished, not pensionable)

Not sure if you can get further info via the minute reference - check Family History Research Guide (pdf) available on the British Postal Museum and Archive website http://postalheritage.org.uk/page/genealogy  You may be able to find a pension record reference there, too.

Re Edwd C Drury - entry doesn't say much (not many of them do):

Nov 1914: Nomination 239010, Edwd C Drury, Asst Pman, LPS  (London Postal Service)

And
Jan 1914: Nomination 241069 Chas W.e. Drury, Sklld Wkn, Engr London, minute E13816
Jun 1914 - ditto last entry except Sklld Wkman II (second class)

Thanks.

Someone on Ancestry Facebook page has just pointed out that there is a list on the British Postal Museum and Archives site - right at the end of their Family History Research Guide (pdf, http://postalheritage.org.uk/page/3292/Family-History-Research-Guide)  I'll copy most of this to my blog post at http://cutlock.wordpress.com/2011/07/20/getting-posted-to-the-post-office/ for easier access.

Anyone know of a good source to crack the appointment records abbreviations - lots of the positions are shortened in some way? Thanks.

The 'new' Norfolk Surnames website is no longer working, I see - you get a Yahoo GeoCities error page. Anyone have an update? Would be happy to host on my 'new' website, Cutlock and Co, www.cutlock.co.uk, if the source is available somewhere.

Cheers

John

This has been all very helpful. Have now gone into the library and got a pdf of The Times page in question. Its amazingly brief after the long articles in the local newspaper.

On the online archive access, I checked with the library and at present newspaper access is only available on site (and they can't even access it from the front desk computers - has to be the bookable machines), although they didn't know this before I asked! Its the Gale InfoTrac system, perhaps its because this includes more recent newspaper access too? Anyway they will raise the non-access with Worcestershire library IT.

Thanks again.

Many thanks for that. He was married again in less than 5 years (closer to 4) so presumably got out early for good behaviour (did they have that system 100 years ago?).

Thanks, I thought that might be the case too, although their website is not as clear as it might be.

I'm signed up for Worcestershire CC library service, and have a card but the online newspaper access doesn't appear to work, consistently refusing my card number. (I've successfully logged in to the Citizens Advice service via it, so my card must be valid. And tried several web browsers - I'm not a novice.)

I don't expect online library help here, but if you do have any hints, great!
