Hi, yes, I knew about the workhouse. I've never satisfactorily traced his father George's death, and as for his grandfather Thomas!

Thanks very much, everyone. The military reason sounds the most likely, I think. I haven't found any trace of a baby whose imminent birth might have speeded up the first marriage.
If he enlisted already married he wouldn't have needed a second marriage ceremony, would he?

Charles Cornwell, born 1857 Bury St Edmunds, seems to have married the same woman, Alice Pierson, twice.
Both at Portsea island, Hamps. Once June 1877, the second time June 1882
has anyone an explanation for this? it's intriging me

Hi Debbie,
yes William was Elizabeth's brother, he was baptised on the same day, 21/5/1818, not that that makes them twins

Norfolk / Re: Symonds Norfolk research question
« on: Thursday 25 October 12 16:13 BST (UK)  »
Hi. I've been looking into the Symonds of Shipdham too. I've got Gulielmi Simonis, son of Arthur, 1639.

The Symonds morphed into Semmens (or at least, my line did) and I can't fill the gap between these early Symonds and my John

Symonds, Shipdham, 1753. Glad of any help

Hi everybody. I've got Berkshire Mays too, mostly Wolverton.

I've got Martha May, married John Brooks in 1820, and I think her parents were John May, b c1785 and Sarah Goddard . that's
as far as I've got with the Mays, although I have a lot on the Brooks, if anyone's interested

A late thanks, I'm sorry
It could be Church Warden as I've got him as a possible Beadle and also gardener to the church, which means a connection with it.  Presumably the Church would keep a record?
