My uncle did a lot of genealogy on the Blackstocks interviewing my grandma and he noted that William Blackstock was lost at sea--glad to hear he survived, married and continued the lineage down under!

Dear Sheila,

This is so cool--my great grandmother was Jane (Jeannie as she was known) Blackstock. There are many Jeannies in the family.  I know of Whiteinch as my mother took photos years ago of the row of houses where Grandma lived.  Thanks for the history.
I don't know a scanner I'm sorry to say but he wrote that note at the end of the old testament on a page which was only half full of print, his writing has a bit of flourish it reads: James Cafry his watch No. 7(?)456 second line: Bought November 1, 1836 ...price symbol L under that 4 symbol s (under that 4, symbol D under that 0; next line Bought off Mr. Sprat Springfield.

Also in the bible were Glasgow Sabbath School Union, scripture Lesson Scheme, 1875 for the first quarter; another clipping was Bible lessons for the fourth quarter, 1866, Oct, Nov. and Dec.  and Appeal in connection with Special Evangelistic Services to be hled throught the Glasgow Free CHurch Presbytery, The way of Life and the Way of Death. another Dowanhill U.P. Mission, Whiteinch, meetings on Sabbath (no date).  No wonder we have ministers in the family!  Jane Blackstock married in 1878 in Whiteinch and my grandmother's note written in 1971 said this was James Blackstock's bible--wondering if he spent time in Glasgow or he gave it to her to use.
Do you have much information on the other siblings of Sarah?  From the oral history some died before adulthood,  Wm Blackstock was lost at sea, Mary Stevenson Blackstock-do you know why that middle name, same with John White Blackstock. Does the name Matthew White ring a bell?
I have a photo of my gr-grandmother, as a young woman, she was pretty and plump and lived to the age of 91, buried in Vancouver, British Columbia.
Thank you for your information.
Jeannie

Trish and Sheila,
The bible's print date is 1808 and printed in Glasgow; however there is no entries relating to family events. There is a handwritten note that reads James Cafry his watch (a number)  bought November 1, 1836 price 4 pounds bought off Mr. Sprat Saintfield.
I found the Scottish Parish Records where James and Margaret appeared before McKean stating they had married in Donaghadee,  Inncast or Inn East,  dated in 1827.  I have been curious about their marriage in Ireland as well; the Moffat name seems to be from Dumfrieshire.  You ladies have a better understanding of this; my part of the world isn't as old as yours!
I do have a copy of James Blackstocks death certificate.  My grandmother, Margaret Ross Thompson was the daughter of Jane Blackstock and James Kennedy Ross Thompson (his family came from Inverness).  She was born in Cairnbowie part of Kirkcolm parish.  Peter Maitland and James Thompson built ships in Glasgow together according to family folklore.  The Jean Boyd being the mother of Robert Edgar would make sense.  I can imagine all those sisters and their families a close pack; my grandmother lived to 97 years of age and her oral history may not have been as accurate.
Are you two related to William Blackstock?  Did he also live in Kirkcolm and when did he die?
Thanks so much for your information,
Jeannie

Trish,
Thanks for the prompt reply.  My uncle was able to get death records in the 1970's when he visited Scotland.  My grandmother told him that James Blackstock had a sister, Jean who married a Boyd--searching censuses couldn't find a connection.  Also, my grandmother remembers visiting his gravesite near Stranraer about 1896 (she was born in 1887), she took a buggy ride to the site! The Blackstock girls married Maitlands, Edgars, Thompsons.
Keep me posted!

I am related to James Blackstock and Margaret Moffat, they are my maternal grandmother's grandparents.  Jane Blackstock married James Thompson and they emigrated to Canada about 1911.  They were Presbyterian, I have James Blackstock's bible. I am curious about the number of Blackstocks from Dumfries and the reference in one of the censuses James and Margaret Blackstock were born in Ireland;  are they Irish or Scottish?
If anyone wants to share please contact me.
