Lanarkshire / Re: Children from: Millar/McDonald/ Nimmo/McDonald

Hello kirkmichael,
This is the family I have been researching.  John MCDonald was a police constable in Coatbridge.  I believe he was attached to the Coatbridge St. Woodside St. police station.
My research so far found NO living biological children from this marriage.

Does the Coatbridge 1911 Census show a child named John Brown McDonald MILLER (bd Oct. 1905) living with them at Coatbridge?
John Brown McDonald Miller was in fact the illigitimate child of Mary Pollock MILLER's sister Elizabeth Allan Miller, who showed an address at 23 Ashton Lane Glasgow.
This couple later moved to Distillery Cottages, GARNKIRK, (Cadder District).  Is there any way to tell when they moved from Coatbridge?

Hi Rocky

The 1911 census record that I found doesn't appear to connect.

Hi Rocky1

There is an entry in the Coatbridge census in 1911 for an appropriately aged John McDONALD and Mary.

But that in the context that I can't see a 1902 marriage for John MCDONALD and Mary POLLOCK, except. of course, that she was Mary Pollok MILLER which 1902 marriage in Coatbridge does indeed exist ...............

Another useful resource in this type of situation is the 1881 Scottish census placename index on Origins.net, which can be searched on part of a name thus dealing in part at least with spelling variations.

For example, Lochbrow could be searched using "Lochb" or "hbrow".

Have a look at this first

Hi M.R.Dien

Many thanks for your reply.

I'm still interested in knowing how to set up a virtual 32 bit m/c in Windows 8, never mind also hearing if anyone has created a piece of software that extracts to data from the LDS 1881 CDs.

The easiest solution is to install and run a virtual machine on the windows 64 bit computer (for example http://www.vmware.com/products/player/ ) using an older verion of windows (the full installation disk is required)

This basically sets up a computer running in a window on your machine and it can access your drives to install the BVRI disks or any other LDS database software.

Having just 'graduated' to Windows8, can I assume that the same advice applies as regards running a virtual machine using a 32 bit computer ?

If so, does anyone know of detailed instructions anywhere on how to use VMware or similar software on how to set up such a virtual 32bit m/c ?

That's always assuming, of course, that no-one has yet produced a piece of software allowing access to the LDS 1881 census CDs on a 64 bit m/c !

The marriage is on SP as

1901 MARCINKIAWICZ MOTEYUS and RUTKAUCKUTIE BRIGITA at BELLSHILL /LANARK

Could this be the family on the 1911 census index?

1911 MERKEVICZE MOTEUSIA Male aged 50 at BELLSHILL /LANARK

As can now be proven from various other records, this 1911 census record shows the father of Jurzas/Yurzas/Youzas MERCINKIAWICZ.

He died in Scotland, so that means that it's possible to go back to the grandparents of Jurzas/Yurzas/Youzas MERCINKIAWICZ.

On Jurzas/Yurzas/Youzas's own death record, it shows that he used the alias Joseph SMITH !

How Jurzas/Yurzas/Youzas morphed into Moteyus on his 1901 marriage record I refuse to speculate !

Hi Bill

I don't like leaving things hanging.

After finding two births between 1901 and 1911, and the corresponding deaths in Scotland, I had another go.

The family is there in 1911 under MARCISKIAWICHS  !   This was truly a nightmare for the enumerator.

There are 4 kids, including the two that I had previously found.  Watch out for names changing, e.g. it looks like the first born, Joseph, was shown in 1911 as Yurzas.

Only three of the kids were born in Scotland, - the other was born in 'America', presumably the USA.

Watch out also for variations in Jurzas senior's wife given name; the Guid Lord only kens what her surname was, see the various birth entries.  Also, I guess, the registrars' nightmare!

Not too much doubt that it is the right family, especially given that the marriage is shown as being 10 years old.  At first I thought that there might have been a remarriage, but the 10 year figure knocks that on the head.

Jurzas is shown as born in ''Lietwa', - that might be Lietiva, - this is almost certainly Lietuva, which is the Lithuanian for Lithuania.

He's also shown as having Russian nationality.

This 1911 record is unlikely to be the man from the 1901 marriage as he was aged 20 in 1901 !

Despite some expert use of wildcards, I can't immediately find a better 1911 census record ...............

Be aware that such men, born in Lithuania, were Russian nationals, who were forced to return to Russia and serve in the Russian Army in WWI.

Their wives and kids in Scotland were left with no support from the UK authorities, and many of them were "shipped back" to Russia <sad g>

Selkirkshire / Re: Looking for burial records for old cemetery in Selkirk
« on: Thursday 06 December 12 23:29 GMT (UK)  »
William Scott's 1855 death record show's he (76 years of age and living in Halliday's Park) was interred in the Selkirk Church yard. I presume that means the old cemetery there but i can find no mention of him on memorial inscriptions so i wonder if he was buried without a headstone. By that time he was a pauper as were many other Hand Loom Weavers like him.  Does anyone know of burial records for the old cemetery in Selkirk? He was a widower of Isabel Bell.
Merv

Hi Merv

Firstly, a significant proportion of gravestones from that era have not survived.

Especially given that he was a pauper at death it's quite unlikely that his survivors had the funds required to purchase what was quite an expensive item, - i.e. a headstone.

The only possibility that I can think of is to contact the local Church of Scotland church to see what burial records they have.
