US Lookup Requests / Joan Florence Sinclair
« on: Thursday 23 April 15 10:09 BST (UK)  »
Hello

I am wondering if anyone can help me trace one of my relatives. I am trying to find Joan Florence Sinclair who was born in Ipswich England 14 April 1918. She married John Liddell Munn in Portsmouth 17th June 1939. Unfortunately the marriage ended in divorce. Joan had a daughter who was born 1st October 1945 in Norwich England.
Joan and her daughter travelled to New York and arrived at La Guardia Airport on 12th November 1947. They were both listed on the passenger manifest with the surname of Munn.Their intended destination was Hillsdale New York. I know that Joan was in Great Barrington Massachusetts on 31 May 1948. After this time I can not find any trace of either Joan or her daughter.
I would particularly like to find out what happened to her daughter as I have some very exciting news for her.
I would be most grateful for any help anyone can give me.

Nick

The Common Room / Re: WARNING!!! Wills and Probate Online - UK
« on: Friday 23 January 15 14:16 GMT (UK)  »
My Cousin recently applied for a will for our great grandfather who died in 1950. After 13 days she got a message stating it was ready for download. However upon visiting the relevant page there was nothing to download. She then sent two messages to ask what was happening. Yesterday she got the following response.

The item that you have ordered is not available.  All sealed documents issued pre-1963 have been destroyed.  HMCTS policy was to retain all sealed documents issued before 1963 for 50 years from the date of issue.

What is a ‘sealed document’?

The sealed wills/grants in the probate index are when property or money in a bank, a trust fund etc are outside the jurisdiction of the country where the will is being proved. For example if the will was being proved in New York then in this case the 'outside' country is England or Wales and the country the will is being proved in is the USA.

I have referred your order to HMCTS so that you will receive a refund for your order.

My points here are why isn't this stated clearly on the website and also an apology would have been nice.

Lanarkshire / Re: Laundry in Blantyre
« on: Saturday 06 December 08 07:04 GMT (UK)  »
Sorry to but in but this post has caught my attention, my Grandmother Elizabeth Clelland Liddle Munn stated on her marriage registration that she was a laundry worker residing in Cambuslang. A quick search on the internet has revealed that the Initial Rentokil group closed this establisment in 2004.

The following was taken from The Rutherglen Reformer website

Another little piece of town history goes as laundry is demolished
Dec 13 2007 By Douglas Dickie, Rutherglen Reformer

ANOTHER part of Rutherglen disappeared with the demolition of the Richmond Park Laundry building last week.

The building, which had stood for over 100 years, was reduced to rubble after workmen moved in to clear the land, which is expected to be used for housing.

The laundry had become synonymous with the Burgh and even to the present day had become an important focal point for people on buses or looking for directions.

It filled a similar role to that of Hoover in Cambuslang, with generations of families working in it when it was one of the main employers in the area.

At one point, it was regarded as Britain’s largest single employing laundry, with over 1000 workers. It vied with industrial powerhouses like Whites as Rutherglen enjoyed a boom era.

However, with the decline of the industrial sector in the town, work started to tail off and the laundry’s last owner, Rentokil Initial Textile Services announced in 2005 that it was ending work at the building, which had by then been deemed unsafe.

In recent years, the building had become best known as a bus terminus for the number 12 service.

South Lanarkshire Council leader and Rutherglen resident Eddie McAvoy recalled: “It had been here a long time and was part of industrial Rutherglen when many years ago we had shipbuilding, engineering and ropeworks in the town.

“This was the last of that side of Rutherglen that was left. Everything has now gone and been replaced with things like supermarkets.

“I suppose it is progress and moving on. When I left school, you would walk into a job and serve your apprenticeship but it has completely changed now.”

The land is likely to be sold for housing, with the finalised South Lanarkshire wide plan listing the land as being for residential use.

l Did you once work in the Richmond Park Laundry or have any photos of the building?

If so, contact the Reformer on 0141 647 2271 and tell us your story

Lanarkshire / Re: Pettigrew family

Janet

I am still not sure whether your Pettigrews are connected as I haven't had time to investigate properly. However could I suggest that you have a look at the following sites and see if you can spot anything relevent.

1. http://www.dgdclynx.plus.com/bath/findings.html

This site is run by Douglas Clark who is a great guy and the other is which is run by his cousin.

2.http://www.enternet.co.nz/users/colin/genealogyweb.html

Hope this might help

Hello Janet

I would be most interested to know what area of Lanarkshire your Pettigrew family came from. I have a connection to a Pettigrew family that lived in the Cambuslang/Blantyre area.

United States of America / Walter Ramsay Munn
« on: Thursday 25 November 04 20:42 GMT (UK)  »
Hello Everyone

I am trying to trace a passenger list which lists my g-g-grandfather Walter Ramsay Munn b.1857 Shettlestone Glasgow who emigrated to the U.S.A in 1881/1882. We know that he settled in Streator U.S.A and that he travelled most probably with his brother William. I already have a record of him making a return to Scotland in 1889 as I have found a record of his return voyage on the Ellis Island site but I do not seem able to find a record of his original trip to the U.S.A. If anyone can help I would be eternally grateful.

All the best.

Australia Lookups completed / Re: South Australian lookup offers
« on: Thursday 25 November 04 07:16 GMT (UK)  »
Hello Shanko

If possible I would like to take you up on your offer. My grandparents emigrated to Australia in 1951 and settled in Adelaide they were Achibald McWilliam and Elizabeth Clelland Liddell Munn and they brought their children Margaret(my mother) Archibald and John(otherwise known as Jack) with them. Archibald senior came back to the U.K as did my mother as did Archibald junior. My mother married in 1961 in Birmingham and her father is shown on her marriage certificate as being a resident of Aberdeen. According to my stepbrother Archibald junior was killed in a forklift accident in Lincoln. What I am trying to discover is what became of Archibald senior and John(Jack) I am wondering if Archibald senior returned to Australia. I know that Elizabeth died there as I have found a reference to her on the South Australia Genealogy & Heraldry website as shown below.

1. Surname: McWILLIAM
Given name(s): Elizabeth Cleland Liddle
Date: 7 Apr 1996
Source: Deceased Estates
2. Surname: McWILLIAM
Given name(s): Elizabeth
Date: 10 Apr 1996
Source: Cemetery Index
3. Surname: McWILLIAM
Given name(s): Elizabeth
Date: Advertiser 13-4-1996
Source: Newspaper Deaths

I was wondering if Elizabeth's obituary gives any pointers. I have tried to access it through the Adelaide Advertisers newstext service but can,t find it.
The reason I suspect that Archibald returned is that I also found the following on the same website. And I am wondering if this is the same Archibald.

1. Surname: McWILLIAM
Given name(s): Archibald
Date: 10 Mar 1970
Source: Cemetery Index

I would be most grateful for any help you can give me.

Best Regards
