I have read (unknown source) that the VIPONDs in Cumberland in the 1600s and 1700s were descendants of the VERTIPONTs who reached England with the Norman conquests in about 1066.Does anyone have confirmation of this ?There is also a story that an Alston area VIPOND killed in World War 1 was the last male if that line of VIPONDs. Can someone confirm this ? I believe that his name is on the War Memorial in Alston.Cheers, Ian in Canada.
Hi Ian, I have an A3 paper showing Vertiponts to Vipond its well worn I was given it by an Aunt who`s mother was a Vipond. I don`t know put it together but it was long before computers. It starts with William De Veteripont his two sons Ivo & Robert and states that the Gargill Viponds at some point came from these families.
