William
Why do you ask?

I've followed his career in the 5th including the events at which the band performed - and looked in detail at the First Battle of Ypres to identify where he was wounded

Hello Deb,
I was fascinated to find your post about your Grandfather's album because you list a K.J.Catto as one of the men in a photo you have?  K.J.Catto (Kenneth James Catto) was my Grandfather's brother.

What I do know is that K.J.Catto was in the 5th Lancers (Royal Irish) during WW1 then by the 1930's was in Kenya (4th Hussars).  He continued living in Kenya till his death in 1961.

Kind regards,
Charlotte Catto

Your relative is listed in the book 'The Harp and Crown'  a History of the 5th Royal Irish Lancers.  He was awarded the MC ... the book is available online .. the photo reproduction in the printed version is not good so I prefer the ebook

My grandfather was a Bandsmanwith the 5th Lancers serving from 1906 to 1915.

Hi, I wonder could anyone confirm what regiment this uniform is from and possible a year? I have been told it may be the 5th Royal Irish lancers but there is no badges.. Also where would I find information on my great uncle if indeed he was in the 5th Royal Irish Lancers
Any help would be great.... Thank you in advance Yvonne .

Could well be 5th Lancers ... there is a medal card for Willaim Sims (indexed under Simms with note about correct name)  He was awarded 1914 Star so may well have been in the regiment some time ... my grandfather was in the 5th Lancers form 1910 and I have more information .... R

Thanks Janis

Those extracts illustrate one of our problems .. think they add two more variations to the Whillans homonyms.

Does anyone know if Elsdon residents would worship at Branton?

Elizabeth Altoft born Thorne work house in 1854 is my great grand mother

Married William Johnson in Crayke in June 1876

He mother Jane Dobson was unmarried but went to Crayke and married William Dobson in 1867

Have BMD Certs and have followed all Jane's descendants to 1911

Happy to share

Family tale is that Elizabeth's father was Edward VIIth .. highly unlikely as he was 12 at the relevant time...

Robin

ps the Altoft carried on as a middle name for several generations

Hi Emma

Looks like you made a great start ...
The Galtress family is a life long interest of mine ever since I found out it was my grandma's maiden name.

I have more information about your ancestors if you are still searching.
All the Galtress families eventually trace back to the York area and the ancient Forest of Galtres.

I have a detail tree of the Birkenhead branch and where they fit in .. the result of painstaking research by Eric Page in the 1970's and 1980's

Happy to help

Regards

Robin

ps our flock name is Galtress and the Galtress sheep can be seen at www.scottishwool.com
