Fife / Andrew Young born Markinch, Fife 12 Apr. 1878.
« on: Wednesday 06 February 13 15:39 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to find information on Andrew Young b. 12 Apr 1878 in Markinch Fife.
His parents were : father - James Barrie Young and mother - Jane Walker Hogg.
At the time of the 1881 Census the family were living in Byker, Newcastle upon Tyne.
Sometime between March 1884 and November 1886 the family moved to Ayton in Berwickshire but Andrew does not appear on the 1891 Census for the family living in Ayton at that time.
The only other information from family sources is that he emigrated to South Africa, never married and was involved in some capacity with South African Roads / Highways.
I cannot find any Emigration or Military records that clearly link to Andrew.

Hi Keith,

I obtained my father's RAF Service Record from RAF Disclosures at Cranwell. If you have not tried this approach go to the following site and follow the various links given to download the forms required and find the full address details at Cranwell.

http://www.mod.uk/DefenceInternet/AboutDefence/WhatWeDo/Personnel/ServiceRecords/MakingARequestForInformationHeldOnThePersonnelRecordsOfDeceasedServicePersonnel.htm

There is a £30 charge.

I received two pages which contain unit and movement date info. There are many abbreviations on the record and I still not manged to obtain full details of the meanings of some of these.

Regards - Keith A.

Canada / Mary Adamson Young
« on: Tuesday 26 April 11 20:47 BST (UK)  »
I am seeking any information on Mary Adamson Young who emigrated to Winnipeg in the early 1900's and a relative believes that she subsequently married a doctor named Robin? McCardle (presumed spelling).

Mary was born in Byker, Newcastle upon Tyne, England 20 Sept 1879. Her parents were James Barrie Young and Jane Walker Hogg. At the time of the Scottish 1891 Census Mary was living with her family at Ayton in Berwickshire, Scotland. There is no verified record of her in the UK after that date but she may have been in domestic service in Edinburgh at the time of the 1901 Scottish Census.

I have no information on which year Mary left the UK and I have checked the 1911 Canadian census but cannot identify her. There is a Manitoba marriage record which shows that a Robert Joseph McCardle married a Marie Adamson Young at Brenda on the 23 Nov 1915. I think that Marie may be a transcription error. The record is very brief and has no residence or parents details on it.

Any information on Mary's life in Canada would be appreciated

World War Two / RAF WW2 Service Records

I have a copy of my late father's RAF WW2 service record and need some help in identifying some of the entries.

In "Reason" Column : Letters H (think this may be "holding"), HH, X and F.  The X is shown adjacent to Unit entered as 21 A.D. which corrresponds with his service in France.
Reference is made to "No. 2 Mobile High Speed W/T Unit" - any info on this unit would be appreciated.

Later service is with 80 (s) Wing and then a unit designated "2 Signals Depot" at locations Symington, Lerwick and Aberdeen (twice). Any info on the latter unit would be appreciated.

Buckinghamshire / Ancestors of Benjamin GRIGGS
« on: Thursday 21 May 09 09:45 BST (UK)  »
Trying to find more info on the ancestors of Benjamin Griggs b abt 1813 Sherington, Bucks.
1841 Census shows Benjamin living in Bradley, Derbyshire and he married his first wife Charlotte Bromley in Bradley that year. By 1851 they had moved to Tixall, Staffordshire.
After Charlotte’s death, Benjamin remarried 23 Aug 1862 to Mary Devall and entry of marriage shows his father as George Griggs – Farmer.
I believe that George Griggs could be the son of Benjamin Griggs and Ann Rogers and was born in Sherington abt 1777. Benjamin and Ann married in Sherington 23 Mar 1774.
I have found no record to show George’s marriage but there are records showing  two Sherington births with father George Griggs and mother Ann. These are for Hannah Griggs b abt 1815 and John Francis Griggs b abt 1817.

Any information on the family of George Griggs, his parents and earlier ancestors would be appreciated
