Europe / Re: Have I found a German immigrant ancestor?
« on: Friday 31 December 04 12:22 GMT (UK)  »
Thanks for your advice Bob.

It's unlikely this is my man...:(

However I followed your link and eventually ended up in the London Gazette webpages, where I found some useful background for more recent family members,  :) so some good has come of this research...

Thanks again...

Europe / Have I found a German immigrant ancestor?
« on: Wednesday 29 December 04 19:17 GMT (UK)  »
I have been investigating my Kisler tree (in the Suffolk and London pages), and now need to look at where they came from - Germany.

(Sorry, the message below is long - questions are at the end if you don't want to plough through it all!)

The earliest part of the family I have found apparently were all born in Germany, and presumably moved over here together... (info from various censuses, 1851 onwards...)

My German family as far as I know is...
John b 1777
Elizabeth (wife) b 1801
Elizabeth (daughter) b 1830
Jacob (son) b 1835

In the 1851 census they are in London living in the same house, though the daughter is married with a 1yo daughter (German son-in-law also living there - surname Dittmer). In a later census, Jacob appears to list his birthplace as Darmstadt.

I have been looking on the National Archive Catalogue web pages (www.catalogue.nationalarchives.gov.uk), to see if I could find their immigration or naturalisation records... There are none for Kislers that appear to be relevant, but there is a John August Kiesling from Saxony whose naturalisation papers were issued on 22 May 1858 (cert 2664)

I know that in the UK, the surname Kisler is quite unusual, but presumably is more common in Germany. However, I have also noticed Berlin Bob's note elsewhere about the possibility of name changes on immigration - so maybe it isn't so far off... Is there any chance this is my John?

Does naturalisation normally happen close to the date of immigration, or could it be several years after arrival (if they had only arrived just in time for the 1851 census, it would be 7 years after arrival). Could they chose not to naturalise? What information does the actual paperwork contain (birthdate? other family members? which might help to identify whether I have the right person?)

Thanks for any advice, information or pointers you may have...

Wow!

It must be them - my great uncle's notes said that he thought Jacob's father, John had died in 1847 - It looks as if he was right to put a question mark against this! And Jacob had a sister that I have not heard about! Lots more to investigate....

Thank you so much!

I've been told that there are some Kislers in the 1851 census at
ref HO 107/1547 folio 79

I'm hoping that there might be a Jacob or Elizabeth (son aged 18ish and mother aged 51) here - but the name is rare in this spelling, so anyone else might be a relative...

Thanks in advance

Hi Gill

Nothing even remotely like Meinecke in the family I know about (so far). Jacob's wife's maiden name was Schimff or Schimpp, so another German connection (though she was apparently born in London). Maybe if I get further back? Thanks for the comment anyway, it would have been a useful coincidence if they had been the same family...

Sylviaann

Thanks for the info - the Kisler's in St Georges in the East (the ones you said were in HO 107/1547 folio 79) would be particularly interesting to know more about - since the family and their decendants lived in that area of London later.

I've never seen the Kisler name miswritten as Kisser - but it seems quite a likely variant, and there ought to be both Jacob aged roughly 18 and his mother aged 51 in 1851 out there somewhere, at the least. I probably ought to wait until I know about the possible Kislers before looking at the Kissers.

Thanks very much

London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / Re: Kisler family - Whitechapel 1860ish?

Hi

That's interesting. I've noticed Kislers in the Hull area, but I'm not aware of any connections.

Jacob was apparently born in Germany - Darmstadt according to the 1871 census (this was a bit of a surprise to us - we thought he had been born in London!)

With his wife and children, he moved from London to Suffolk and back to London - but after that, he remained in London to living memory (only one son survived and married and he also remained in London - the others were all daughters, and most were unmarried). My great uncle - Jacob's grandson noted that Jacob's father and mother were John and Elizabeth (but I have no other evidence for this).

John Kisler was supposedly born in 1768 and died in 1847. Elizabeth was supposedly born in 1800 and died in 1863. We have no knowledge of any children other than Jacob. However, we have noticed that Elizabeth was much younger than John - and wonder whether there might have been an earlier wife - or even half siblings?

I'm assuming that if there is any connection, then it would be via John or hypothetical siblings of Jacob. I haven't been able to trace Jacob any earlier than 1871 yet.

Anything looking familiar?

Just done a quick check and happened to come across a message on another genealogy forum from one of the Unwins in the village (I don't know him personally, but our children are in the same class at the village school!).

http://genforum.genealogy.com/unwin/messages/219.html

I don't know whether this leaflet might help? or if he knows anything else about his earlier family?

Of course you may already know about this.
