Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Re: Does anyone recogonize this uniform?

Wow!  Thank you so much everyone!

Adrian, I do believe that was my relative!  This is what I have been able to confirm:

John and Mary Flannery married in India in 1861, together they had 4 children, Patrick 1863, Julia 1864, John 1868 and Edward 1870, all born in India.  Sometime after Edward's birth, John and Mary died (I am unsure of the cause, a handwritten note from my grandmother states she believed they had contracted a disease and died from it mid 1870's in India).  All four children went to live in various workhouse in England.  I know that Patrick Sr and John went to the Medway Union Workhouse.  I also know from my grandmother's note that Patrick Sr served in the Boer war and that he was released from duty due to illness.  He married a Maud Eldridge.  I am unsure of how my grandmother and her brother (Patrick Jr) came to be.  What I do know for certain is that Patrick and my grandmother's mother both worked at the same place and it resulted in 2 children.  Her name was Florence Edith Rose Cook.  My grandmother was Edith Joan Flannery born in 1911 and her brother Patrick was born shortly after Patrick Sr's death in 1913.  They came to Canada, sponsored by the Salvation Army, in July of 1920, in hopes of a better life.  My grandmother's note suggests that they were born out of wedlock as a result of an affair.  My grandmother's birth certificate says her name was Flannery at the time of birth, however when she came to Canada, her last name, as well as her brother and mother, are listed as Cook.

I did not know that Edward came to Canada also.  To the best of my knowledge, neither did my grandmother.  I do not believe she knew much of her father at all and was always lead to believe that it was kept secret until just before they came to Canada.  Again, with everyone having passed away many years ago, there is no way for me to confirm this.

I am so happy that you all have recognized the uniform as it gives me a new place to start looking for my family.  I have always hit a huge road block when it comes to that side of the family because so little was known of my grandmother's parentage.

Thank you all so very much!!!

This is a photo of Patrick Flannery that I found in my late grandmother's things.  I do not know if it is her brother Patrick Flannery Jr (b in 1913) who served in what I think was WW2 or his father Patrick Flannery Sr (b in 1863 in India) who also served for the British Army.  What do the strips on the sleeves mean and the numbers on the collar?  Ir perhaps this may be Patrick Flannery Sr's father John Flannery who served in the British Army in India in the mid 1870's?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you!

can anyone tell me where this uniform is from?  This is a photo of my great grandfather who served in H.M. 2/10 Regt.  I am most interested in finding out what the number on his collar is referring to (239)? I don't know much about the British Army, but I am guessing his was a foot regiment?

Hi Jayne,

Sorry I haven't been on for a while as we have been doing some home renovations...the information you have found is fantastic!  I would be most happy to see a copy of the marriage certificate, I appreciate the offer.  The only thing of interest that I have been able to find out is that Edith Florence Rose Cook Flannery worked for a Lord Michael in the early 1900's.  My grandmother's notes indicate that Lord Michael's wife was an actress.  I have not been able to find any proof of this however, just a handwritten letter from my grandmother's mother to her sister.  If I find anything else of interest on this, I will most certainly let you know.

You can email me anytime at (*).

Take care,

Christina Cook-Rothbauer

Thanks CaroleW,

So I guess my question now is, why do the children carry the Twyman name and is William Wales the father of the children who carry the Twyman name?

Hi there everyone,

I am looking into the Twyman last name.  Everyone on my father's side of the family has passed away so I am relying on hand written accounts from my grandmother.  Here is what I have found:

In my grandmother's mother's funeral service visitation book, my grandmother (Edith Joan Flannery Cook) lists her mother's name as Florence Edith Rose Cook Flannery Dawdy (pure coincidence that her mother's maiden name was Cook and she herself married a Cook - makes for confusing research).  In that record, she has written her mother's mother's name as being Rose Wales.  I have since been able to obtain a copy of Florence's 2nd marriage.  Florence states her mother's name is Ellen Rose Twyman.  My grandmother has also kept death notices from her relatives in England.  She has written on one for William Wales that this was Florence's  maternal grandfather.   She also has one for Charlotte Wales and has written that this is Florence's maternal aunt.  I have been able to find a Rose Ellen Twyman that gave birth to, coincidently, Florence Edith Rose Cook, who was married to a John Cook (this appears to match).  This is where I get confused.  I have found documents that state Rose Ellen Twyman's mother's name is Susannah Twyman (married to William Wales - good so far) but Susannah's father's name is James Twyman.  So it appears as follows:

James Twyman is Susannah Twyman Wales' father
Susannah Twyman Wales is Ellen Rose Twyman Cook's mother

It just seems odd that there are 3 generations of MATERNAL Twyman names.  I am curious to find out as to whether Ellen Rose Twyman and Rose Wales are the same person, and if so, was she perhaps born out of wedlock and then adopted by William Wales or is there a separate Twyman family unrelated to James Twyman and William Wales is a second husband.

Please help....I am so very confused!

Thanks

tgit

Casalguidi,

I believe that the people you found are indeed my relatives as I know my gr grandmother was born in 1884 in Margate.  How did you find the emigrant record?  I have been searching for the last 9 months for this record and here in Canada, they say they have no record of her ever coming to Canada....I would be very interested in seeing that.

Thanks again fo the help!
