Hello Jan

The answer is yes (probably).

The problem is describing where it is as many landmarks shown on Google maps are in the wrong place. Attached is a picture, courtesy Google maps. The house on the right is Bridge House and on the left Mill Bridge Cottage, with corrugated iron roof and not lived in now.

Try this link
http://www.undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/skye/serpentarium/index.html
The picture at the top of the page shows the Serpentarium which is housed in the old watermill. At the far end of the building was the water wheel and you can see a small footbridge which crosses the Allt a Mhuillin (Mill Stream), Immediately behind the old mill is the Mill Bridge which carries the old main road (single track) to Portee. Bridge House can be seen but Mill Bridge Cottage is obscured.

Hope that helps

Durham Lookup Requests / Re: Burial of John Finlay
« on: Wednesday 25 February 09 17:40 GMT (UK)  »
Hello

My 3xG Grandfather was John Finley. He can be tracked thro' the 1841, 51, 61 & 71 censuses. In 1851 his birthplace is given as Streetgate, in 1861 it could be Sunniside and in 1871 it looks like Loosing Hill.

Using his various ages given in these censuses he was born between 1784-86 and on 30/12/1811 he married Mary Matters in Middleton-in-Teesdale. He died on 26/11/1871 aged 87 years giving a birth year of 1874.

I believe his parents are your John & Hannah. They married in 1777 in Gateshead. Their first child, George, was baptized in Whickham and their address was given as Lowhand, which I believe includes Dunston and is on the Tyne. The next two children are also baptized in Whickham, but the next seven are baptized in Lamesley and the given address is Loosing Hill.

Most work for people in Loosing Hill and nearby Streetgate was on the Tanfield Wagonway and many people living there were waggoners, wheelwrights & cartwrights. After 1800 this work fell off as steam power was increasingly used and the already small population dwindled and today the name Loosing Hill is no longer used.

All this is a long winded way of saying I think they could have moved away! So not much help there I'm afraid, I to am looking for John Finley's Birth & Death dates and if I find anything I'll let you know.
