Wm Chalmers (59) is recorded in the 1851 census as living in Morison House, Jacks Brae, Aberdeen, with his wife Mary Robertson(?) and 3 children and being a "gardener of 1 acre". Anyone know anything about this family?

I have seen in the National Library a copy of "A History of the Oliver surname on the Scottish Border" by Colonel W H Oliver. This was merely a duplicated booklet not a printed book. Anyone have this or know who has?

Also, the good Colonel quotes a tradition that the Olivers tended to be more dark-haired and skinned than was usual among their neighbours (due to foreign origin?) - has anyone heard of such a notion?

Berwickshire / GROSARTS OF COLDSTREAM
« on: Saturday 04 April 09 14:57 BST (UK)  »
I have been unable to locate baptism details for Janet Wilson nee Grosart. The 1871 census has her living near Melrose, aged 47, hence born 1823 or 1824, and born in Coldstream. Grosart is an unusual name - means Gooseberry in Scots so far as I know!

Anyone know anything of this lady, her family or origins of the name?

Audrey, Steve,
Thanks again. There is quite a discrepancy between the John recorded as 60 in the 1941 census and the birth-date of 1787 you mention Audrey. Were the recorders as rough and ready as that? (It would also mean he was just 18 when first child arrived, but quite possible no doubt.)

Jane is my ancestor and I think there was only one younger boy, who came after her.

Excuse my ignorance, but what is IGI?

Regards

Alan

Many thanks, Terry. Yes, this is Henry alright - I have actually seen Swingill Cottage, albeit unoccupied now.  I know his wife came from Dumfriesshire, but these two girls are news to me.

I see why I failed with freeCEN - John was much older than I thought, Betty was dead probably and Henry had already left home.

Had a look at freeCEN but the search engine did not turn up the family in 1841 despite the precise details you and Piglet gave (I am usually cursed with these things) -  any insights as to what i might be doing wrong? In any case no doubt it will simply say "agricultural labourer" etc., but I should like to confirm the address at least.
