Australia / Re: Did this McGREGOR family emigrate to Australia?

Hi Gerry,

Good find, but you have in fact brought up the heart of my problem.

There were 2 Alexander MacGregor / Ann MacLennan couples living in Applecross at the same time.

I know that "my" Ann was the one born 23 June 1807 and that married 2 April 1829. The problem is: was that the couple that migrated to PEI or was it the one that was still in Applecross in 1841.

The couple you mention migrated to PEI before 1841, because they had a daughter born in PEI in 1840. The other couple appears in Applecross in 1841 and then vanishes.

I am quite sure that the PEI couple is "my" family. But as I cannot find the death records for Ann nor Alexander (they both died in 1846) I'm missing the proof. That's why I'm looking for the other couple, with the hope of finding Ann's parents in her death record, which would confirm which Ann is the one I'm looking for.

By the way: KableWalker, thanks for the information, I'll be taking a look at those records you mention. This search has taken me years and it's time to try all possibilities.

Cheers to you both,
Kiko

Ross & Cromarty / Re: Melvilderg

As Lynn said in her message 2 years ago, some day we might find the answer as to where Melvilderg was located.

I finally got to see a map where Melvilderg appears. It was located on the coast to the south of South Erradale, not far from Dibaig. It looks like some records that appeared as "Melvilderg" later appeared as "Dibaig".

Melvaig and Melvilderg were different places.

Cheers,
Kiko

Hi Bob,

If you get access to some Argentine records, bear in mind that "James" is a tricky name in the old Argentine records. Often those first names were transcribed into Spanish equivalents, but in the case of James I've rarely seen it transcribed as "Jaime" (which would be the equivalent today). Instead, I've often seen it transcribed as "Santiago".

Other Countries / Re: Valapraiso, Chile........Walter Marrow died 1940

Hi Morag,

Have you seen this site: http://www.archerfamily.org.uk/family/marrow.htm

It says Walter was from Anfield, Liverpool. The information there also suggests that the Harold mentionned by Jorose was Walter's brother and he was (Harold) a captain in the Chilean navy.

Hi Jan,

Family Search are indexing Chilean births from 1885 to 1900 right now (I participate in this indexing process). No record for Bisset is available yet online. So I guess sometime in the future (maybe next year?) it could appear. It will depend on where exactly she was born. Most of the records we have been indexing over the last months correspond to Central and Northern Chile, which is where (aside from Patagonia) most of the British settled.

Cheers,
Kiko

Hi Jan,

What would be the name of the child and his parents?

I'd say Jorose is right with his 1895 census entry. The surnames appear as "Laiño", which would be a very close phonetic translation of Lagneau in Spanish. According to the census, they were married 10 years earlier and father Armand was a bricklayer.

Hi Sage,

It wouldn't be the same Alexander because my one did not marry and had no descendants. But maybe I have some information on your Alexander, especially if he was from Gairloch. The names of the 4 children you mention were very common in my MacLennan family. Do you have his wife's surname? If you do, I might be able to find him.

Cheers,
Kiko
